Odd question for those who know either Scottish (and perhaps other places nearby) slang...

or at least I assume it's just in Scotland or perhaps Northern England, since I've never heard it before now anywhere else. ;) But what does saying the 'back end' of something mean? For example, in the book I'm reading (set in Edinburgh), they keep saying things like something happened at the back end of six (or some other hour)... is that just ( Read more... )

I'd say it was late in the hour, so the back end of six would be almost seven. Yes, it's vague.

Of course, the Scottish version might be different to my northern English version.
