i just saw the new harry potter movie, and i must say i am just as confused now about the fifth book as i was when i read it. my major question about it comes from the whole "it could have been neville longbottom and the chamber of secrets" (this point didn't come up in the movie but it bothers me none-the-less). they did say that in the movie that ( Read more... )

It could have been Neville. Voldemort thought it was Harry, so Harry is the one he "chose." If he had realized Neville was around, he probably would have tried to kill him too.

Oh, and the reason it could have been Neville is because the prophecy only specified that it would be a boy born at the end of July, or something. Neville has a birthday within a few days of Harry. Come to think of it, so do you! Maybe you are the true chosen one!

Yeah, what she said but the prophecy also said the boy was to be born to parents who has "thrice defied the Dark Lord." Both the Longbottoms and the Potters fit into that category, but for some reason that JK Rowling has yet to tell us, Voldemort picked Harry to "mark as his equal"--hence the scar. There was probably a reason he picked Harry over Neville, but she hasn't told us. Also, perhaps he was going to go after Neville but when his curse backfired, he couldn't.

After Harry got the scar and his parents died--Neville was out of the picture. After Harry had been marked as an equal, Voldemort made it about Harry--not Neville.

Anyway the prophecy got put in the Department of Mysteries when it was made but it was put up there under "Dark Lord and (?)" then latter they added "Dark Lord and (?) Harry Potter" and since his name was there--it was now about him.
