Honestly, it's all about confidence. And that is why I think it's so hard to do.

You have to be assertive and confident when you say "I am a photographer"... and "this is why I want to take your picture."

Make it seem like you care / are interested in them and don't just want to snap something and walk away.

Although I also feel like the fact that I had a large Wista 4 x 5 camera gave some legitimacy to my request.

I was watching some reality show (unfortunately) one day of cops on the beach. These little kids told their mom that this guy with a camera had been taking pictures of them, so all the parents got together of the kids on the beach and started watching this guy walking up and down the shoreline taking pictures towards the water. Finally someone calls the cops, and the cop asks the guy what he's doing. He says taking pictures of his kids. The cop says, I'm sorry but I have to take your camera and see the last few pictures you've taken. So the cop does, and he looks, and sure enough, just pictures of the guy's kid, and the guy's kid only. He was pretty ticked, but understood and put his camera away in his car. Pretty crazy!
