So I'm just a little curious to know why is it that the people who are all for gay marriage and support the gays and what not always make fun of them? I'm just wondering because it's like always such a big deal that Lindsay Lohan is a 'lesbian' (i'm not gonna get into this much further, no pun intended, lol) but then you have people like Chelsea ( Read more... )

Gays are made fun of because you said it yourself. "Its hilarious". When society stops laughing at the "making fun of" gays, things will change but not until.

We no longer make fun of blscks just because they're black. We need to stop making fun of gays just because they're gay. Seems like a simple concept to me.

I didn't want to just come out and say it, but the reason it's "hilarious" to me is because I don't support their lifestyle so I have no reason to think that it's UN-funny and/or offensive! I DO want to clarify that it doesn't mean I HATE gays or anything, I just don't agree with their lifestyle as I was raised in a Christian home, I strongly believe that it's un-biblical, which it is. I just don't understand that people who support one thing are guilty for being "un-supportive" you know? Another scenario would be-let's say I'm like 200 pounds and am making fun of someone who weighs more than me. Are we both fat? Yes. Should we BOTH be on diets? Yes. Then why am I making fun of the other fat person? It's because I'm ashamed.

I also have to say that there won't ever be a time in society where people aren't making fun of people who are gay or black (or fat). Sad to say, but it's true.

I think our culture is still at a place in which being gay is a big deal. We're still pretty close to a time when people would not talk about it. I like that you make this point because it does not make sense at all that people would say they support gay rights 100% and yet make gay jokes. I remember one time one of my friends told me he hated when people said something was "so gay," meaning it was so stupid. I have never used that phrase, but I had also never thought about it before. The phrase is pretty ingrained into our cultural slang. Since we're still fairly close in time to the revolution (the 70s was only 40 years ago), we're all still trying to figure out how to deal with everything (I was going to say "how everything fits" but realized that sounded a bit sexual :)).

I USED to say "so gay," or "that's gay" or whatever, but I haven't said in awhile mainly because the meaning of it HAS changed. Same thing goes with "retarded." Like you mentioned in a comment below, it mean's "slow" or "not working correctly." We all turned it into meaning "dumb" or "stupid." My sister would always yell at me whenever I said it, and I actually stopped saying it. I started feeling really bad for saying it. But every once in awhile I'll say it on accident. It WOULD be nice to be able to live in a world where innocent words aren't taken and made into a slang word. That's probably one of the reasons the world is the way that it is today.

Lmdo at your "how everything fits." No pun intended right? Haha

I personally think the word gay itself is just funny. I don't see why people get offended when I say "That's gay" because technically I am saying "That's happy". It is the people that interpret it wrong. So they shouldn't get offended at all because it meant happy before it meant homosexual. If I wanted to offend them I would say "That's faggy" or "That's homosexual" but I don't. So HA!!! And, according to Michael Scott, faggy means lame so.......lmdo. I don't agree with gay marriage or gay rights but hey, it's not my life so whateva! lol I think I really got off topic with this.....what were we talking about again??!! OH! I do have a kind've good point though! When you talk about people who support gay rights but make fun of gays, it reminds me of blacks. It is ok for them to call each other niggers, but a white person calls them a nigger and BAM! Here comes the dynamic duo of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (Soul Patrol) to demand justice!! The NAACP is allllllllllllll over their butt! Doesn't make sense to me. And why isn't there an ( ... )

I have a similar reaction to the word "retarded". Retarded means "slow" and "slow" means "not working correctly". When you say something is "retarded" what you are really saying is "That is so not working correctly!" The fact that we call mentally disabled people "retarded" is the real problem.

So, I think what you are saying is that we shoudln't call homosexual people "gay" and we should use the word "gay" in slang like, "that is so gay!" to mean "that is so ridiculous it makes me laugh and I'm so happy!" Gay=happy the way retarded=not working correctly. The problem is not that we say "that's so gay!" the problem is that we call homosexuals "gay."

Still, I think most people do use "gay" to mean "dumb" or "stupid" (and "retarded" to mean "stupid"), so until we get these little lexicological misunderstandings cleared up, I think it's best not to use the slang (although I do occasionally say "retarded" :)).

I think we call people "retarded" because they really aren't like the rest of us. It's sad, I know, but that's the truth. So I think that the word "retard" in itself really DOES have some connection with someone who is "handicapped." I think the term/s "handicapped" and "mentally challenged" should maybe be used more than "retard" since retard to the majority of society means dumb or stupid. Totally my opinion on this subject!

Great topic btw...haha...I know I was the one to write the entry, but I'm happy that we're discussing this. :D

If we NEVER started calling homosexuals "gay" then you're right, it would still mean only "happy," but it doesn't sad to say.

Oh and DITTO on your whole black speech! Haha...I don't want to seem racist here but I always talk about this with co-workers about how blacks can talk all ganster, sorry...gangSTA, with each other, you know, calling each other niggas and whatnot...but heaven forbid WE do it? Not that I ever would, because I'm not like that, but when I say WE, I mean WHITE people.

BTW...I was going to say this in your last entry, but wasn't thinking as usual, but anyways I think you'd definitely be great at political science. I had no idea to be honest. :/ I have a political science class right now-public issues-and boy I can't wait for the semester to be done with next week. So what did you want to DO in PS?
