This header is beautiful!

I'd love to use it... but I have no idea how to create a custom layout with LJ. How could I incorporate this?

Well, I can't help you with html writing, sorry:)
But I know that the ready-made "3 column" layout you can find in "customize the look of your journal" allows headers. You just have to add the url in the images section.
I hope that will help^_^
