Really, this changes nothing. But at the same time, it changes everything ( Read more... )

I can't speak for Mike, but while I have a lot invested in success, I do believe in planning for the possibility of failure.

I have 3 questions:

1. Misfits was originally created so that ConVergence could obtain 501.(c)3 status. How will this change deal with that?

2. ConVergence is self sustaining; Misfits is not. What changes will be made to keep Misfits from going the way of all things?

3. Doesn't the membership has any say in this major major change?

1) CONvergence will need to be set up as a separate 501(c)3 organization. One of the ways will be that the funds raised by CONvergence will go to other 501(c)3 organizations, like MISFITS. [This is not an unusual model, as it is similar to Anime Detour.] That's one of the projects over the next several months ( ... )

And one of the reasons why I said that "it changes nothing" is that really we see this as primarily being a fairly internal management thing -- we see a very strong partnership between CONvergence and MISFITS for many years to come with at least the same level of services. But it means that CONvergence isn't micromanaging MISFITS or visa versa -- and both are able to focus on what they've successfully been doing for years and expand successfully in the future.

Really?

"CONvergence has committed funding MISFITS at similar levels for at least the next two convention cycles...MISFITS will also be free to seek other revenue sources. "

It sounds like Misfits is in for a long slow death.
