LAST WEEK, poliphilo led me into a tar pit, one from which I have yet to fully extricate myself. The act was innocent of any malice of course, and done with the best and sincerest intent I am sure, but History Hunters International is a tar pit nevertheless.

I think it tremendous fun. Some aspects I had considered years ago, but others are quite new to me or else, when seen juxtaposed with other aspects of the problem, they seem to take on new meaning and import.

For instance, Bartram's pages have underlined for me how important Palestine was to the Romans -- not because of Palestine itself, but because of its proximity to the Egyptian bread basket. Thus, unrest in Jerusalem could and did threaten the security of the Eternal City itself, however unlikely that statement seems at face value.

And there is obviously more. I suspect I shall be returning to the subject soon. Christianity does not offend me quite so much as it used to, so I feel able to weigh these issues more clearly, now.
