You know, reading Mark Reads Harry Potter has gotten me thinking a lot about HP lately.

And you know, I am surprised that there wasn't--and isn't--more wank about the religious debates in Harry Potter. I mean, in those chapters with Lovegood, you have a pretty good debate about skepticism laid out right in front of you. And didn't anyone notice that ( Read more... )

Oh, I doubt he'll be offended by Hermione as a skeptic, since he's a skeptic himself. He'll be much more likely to feel even more of a connection to Hermione than he already does when he gets to that part.

And no, Rowling doesn't shove anything down anyone's throat. Which is why it's so great that she sort of presents a skeptical debate without comment, then has the skeptic (Hermione) be right most, but not all, of the time. The issue sort of stays open.

i meant he would be offended by the implication of religious undertones in the novel, Since he is an atheist. and there is the chance (not likely, but still) that he might be offended by there being something he doesn't believe/agree with in the books that so far he loves.

I don't agree, by the way, about your chracterization of atheist vs. agnostic. You seem to imply that an atheist wouldn't change his mind if proven wrong. This is incorrect.
