In honour of Mark Reads Harry Potter finishing the whole series, I have decided to rank the HP books in order of preference, starting with my favourite. This was not easy, but:
7 6 4 1 3 2 5
I realize this is controversial. Everyone's all , "Oooh, POA," and I've ranked it 5th. But I stand by my ranking.

4,7,3,5,1,2,6
But it kind of breaks down after the first three; I'm not sure how to compare 1 and 2 with 5 and 6 in a meaningful way.

For some of the books, I can't separate the experience of reading them for the first time (or waiting for them) with the story. I associate OotP, as hard as it is to reread, with the three year summer and meeting up with everyone in Brighton. Meanwhile, I was stuck at home for HBP and my fandom friends were kind of scattered at the time.
PoA edges out DH just slightly (even though I though DH was perfection), because I loved it for so long, and I still think it's such a tight, neat book as Rowling goes.

Mine are: 1 7 3 6 4 5 2
I think the very first chapter in PS is my favourite in the whole series. CoS is OK, but my least favourite because Dobby really annoyed me. He grew on me through the later books and I was devastated when he (Spoiler alert, LOL) died. It was a close tie for last place because Umbridge makes me so angry I fear for my blood pressure when I read OotP. :)

All right. After lots of thought.
6 7 4 2 1 3 5
2 and 1 are definitely tied. 5 is dead last for SURE. Reading 5 downright depresses me.
Although I just love the earlier books SO much, 6 & 7 just were masterpieces! 4 was probably the most fun to read. I felt so satisfied and happy with how the series was going after reading it.
