ever since i read "in a station of the metro" or whatever it's called, it makes me think that anyone can write poetry. and that is NOT the case.

I think Pound was too in love with simplicity, too willing to deny the value of classical poetic styles. And I know--know!--that he was way too hard on Whitman.

I don't know what areas of Miami you went to - but it sounds like you just went up and down the strip and maybe one of the nastier beaches. I found it very nice. And you hate all of Florida? Dude you've gotta go to the keys - that'll change your perspective. Well... go to the keys in a few months after the hurricanes have left and they've - ya know - built the towns again.
There's plenty of charming areas in Florida - but the good ones aren't the type to be listed on the back of a "Girls Gone Wild" video tape box.

TO BE FAIR--I've pretty much only seen the ugly areas of Florida, basically towns that border the turnpike...obviously not FL's aesthetic gems.
I like Ft. Lauderdale.
...I'm not really a bumpkin. I'm not from the South, remember...and while my Cali town was teensy, there aren't many places in California where you can effectively hide from it's ginormous nature. There's worldliness, therefore, to my small-town background...plus, a stint in Seattle and my family's tendency to travel, travel, travel.
