This is lesbian bed death.

(She learned the term during internet research on lesbians. Other things she now knows: 1) Olivia Benson used to be totally butch and totally awesome; 2) Sex between women is more complicated and varied than she could have imagined. But that might not be so impressive; heterosexual sex is probably more diverse than Liz realizes, and Liz has some experience with it.)

But, yeah.

This is lesbian bed death.

When she vocalizes that realization, Gretchen doesn't seem impressed.

"Actually," she says, "we'd have to be in a relationship, or at least have had sex, for this to be lesbian bed death. This is just a mistake." She sighs. "I knew chasing a straight girl was a bad idea."

"Well, I sort of chased you."

"That's true. But I should've known you weren't serious."

"I was serious," Liz insists.

Gretchen doesn't say anything, and Liz isn't sure what to do. As discomforted as she feels by the prospect of leaving Gretchen's bed, she feels equally self-conscious about the possibility of staying. Because she's not going to get better at this, and she's not going to find a guy she gets along with as well as Gretchen.

But, yeah. She's really not a lesbian. She's not even part-gay. Or part-competent at being with a woman, even for a night.

Suddenly, she finds herself seized by the thought that Gretchen will tell Jack about this, and that idea starts to eat away at her brain. She doesn't want Jack to know about her sexual failures, doesn't want him to have another thing to put in his file. But she can't very well ask Gretchen not to share this information; there's no right time to say, "Please don't tell my boss I failed at being a lesbian."

Or maybe there is. She should've googled that while she was doing her research.

"Um," Liz says. "I'm sorry for this."

"Please don't apologize for not being gay." She sighs. "It demeans both of us."

"Does it?"

Gretchen slowly turns her head. "It does."

"Okay. I'm gonna go." She pauses. "You and Jack aren't the sort of friends who discuss the details of their sex lives, are you?"

"Please go."

"Yeah, okay. I'm gonna go."
