Liz can't control her reaction to babies. Jenna knows this. Pete knows this. Pretty much everyone knows this. And Jack probably already knew it, but now he definitely does. Because she usually doesn't start cooing after lunch, and he must notice said cooing is directed at an approaching stroller.
"Who has the babiest baby face?" She crouches down next to the baby, then makes eye contact with the mother. (Or nanny? You can't assume these things.) "She's so cute!"
They talk briefly, and after the baby (and mother... or nanny; she didn't ask) has gone on her way, Liz realizes that Jack hasn't said anything since they exited the restaurant. When she looks over at him, he's somewhere between amused and perplexed.
"Babiest baby face?"
"Well, she had an impressively babyish baby face." She pauses. "I know that makes no sense." It occurs to her they haven't discussed kids. As in having them. "You don't hate babies, do you?" Okay, bad question. Because who would answer yes to that? Well, someone would, but she doesn't think Jack would be that someone. And not hating babies doesn't mean you want to create one. "I mean, you know I want kids, right?"
"No offense, but you haven't exactly been subtle."
"None taken. So, I want kids, and I need to know... Have you ever thought about being a dad?"
She chooses it instead of 'father'; it sounds more domestic and lessens the chance he'll respond by declaring he's considered sperm donation so he could pass on his superior genes.
"I wouldn't have pursued a relationship with you if I wasn't open to having a family." He stops for a moment, adds thoughtfully: "And I will admit that I have often felt a need to pass on my superior genes."
"Ah." She's kind of impressed that he still managed to talk about his superior genes. "You'll impregnate me for the sake of strengthening my bloodline."
As they begin to walk, he slides his fingers between hers. "It would hardly be my primary reason, but it is a benefit."
