He's sixty when he gets divorced again. This marriage lasted for six years -- if you count the year they spent in court, which he does; for much of it, he tried to convince her to come back home. He didn't want to be an absentee father. The sort of father he grew up with.

"You won't be that guy," Liz assured him. "Your dad, the guy you thought was your dad, wasn't interested in being a father. You're a great dad."

Now he believes divorce was necessary, but he's not content with living alone (his child is a visitor in his house). He's also not happy that Liz is still married.

He's unsure why he's started to consider her that way again; many years have passed since he decided his affection for her wasn't romantic, and much has happened. He gave Liz away at her wedding. She was best man at his. Their children -- both daughters, hers a year older -- play together. They've lived separate lives, told their secrets to other people as if no one else knew them.

And he's forgotten he moved on.

Maybe he should have trusted his feelings for her then, or maybe he's simply reevaluating his life because he and his ex-wife fell out of love. Has let himself assume he and Liz, who've cared about each other for years, wouldn't have suffered the same fate.

Sometimes he lies awake in bed, thinking of failures he didn't see coming. Of failures he may be creating out of desire to believe he didn't ruin his marriage. Thinks of his daughter, of Liz's, of how when the four of them are together, it almost feels like a family. Of how he misses the ability to convince himself he's happiest alone.

Those nights, most nights, he doesn't sleep much.
