He never cheats on her.
He's not sure she believes this to be true. Not that she accuses him of anything; in fact, it's her lack of curiosity about what he's been doing when he comes home past midnight, her so I guess you were working late?s and quick changes of subject that make him realize she suspects but would rather not know. But he can't deny accusations she's never made; it would only confirm what she suspects, would make her believe the fallacy even more.
He wishes she would trust him, but he understands she has reason to worry. Not that he wishes to have an affair; not that he can imagine himself having one. But he recognizes his history. She does, too. And maybe that's the downside of turning your best friend into your wife; she knows you completely, knows your mistakes, knows even those failings she finds difficult to accept. And maybe also in play is what it's like being with a woman who's never entirely sure of herself; she can't believe you'd treat her better than you've treated other women.
So he just continues on; continues to love her, pushes himself to be a better husband to her, a better father to their son. Kisses her, makes love to her the same way he did when they first got together, when the thrill of what she feels for him, what he feels for her, was strong enough to make any worries, any concerns she had, fade until she knew only that she wanted him as her husband.
She loves him, this he knows, and she'll stay with him. He hopes, one day, that she'll know, as much as he does, that he has no desire to leave the life they've created, even for a moment.
