Their relationships end at almost the same time. Jack's proves too exhausting -- Maybe a marriage shouldn't be a war; Liz replies Maybe? -- while hers wasn't demanding enough. She should be in love now, not like (maybe she can't love someone who's so similar to herself). He's melancholy, worrying about his child -- who will be born in little more than a month -- worrying more vocally about how the break-up will be handled in the press.
("You're deflecting, right? The press isn't what's upsetting you."
He doesn't reply.)
Jack decides the best way to deal with this is to get drunk. He hasn't had alcohol in months, after all, and:
"Avery is... no longer a factor."
"Yeah, you're not really upset about the press."
Still no response.
He begs her to stay with him -- she'd rather drown her melancholy in TV -- eventually offering her dinner the next night, along with as much takeout as she can carry.
She's definitely getting the better deal.
Later, when they're kissing and Liz knows what they're doing isn't right, he again begs her to stay. The next, last time he begs, she's on top of him. She's wearing everything but her jeans, has her panties pushed to the side, while his pants and underwear are halfway down his thighs. This time his pleas aren't preceded by her resolve to leave, and she's unnerved; she can't be doing this very well. He must be trying to convince himself he's where he wants to be. She squirms, mutters, "This is a bad idea."
But she doesn't stop. He doesn't beg.
His hand slips to where their bodies are joined, his finger toying with cotton and then her. For a moment, she forgets they're making a mistake, forgets she's tried, finally, to have a real relationship and failed.
She groans. "Please."
