Even though she's met Jack's (and Avery's) nanny, Liz feels self-conscious, greeting her while they're in Jack's house. She finds herself wondering what Adrina (this is the nanny's name, and Liz wonders if Jack ever thinks about the fact that he's surrounded by women whose names begin with A... then she wonders why she's thinking about it) assumes about her being there. Does Adrina think Liz is Jack's girlfriend? (Jack initially introduced her as 'my employee' since, well, 'my employee/a woman I'm sleeping with' wouldn't be super appropriate, and taking time out to note their friendship wouldn't really seem right, either.) Is this visit the sort of information she'd report back to Avery?

(Maybe Liz has already been mentioned, already been noted as a regular presence in Jack's office, and Avery...

Liz doesn't know what Avery would feel. Doesn't know if she's still uneasy with their places in each other's lives, doesn't know if Avery suspects anything else is going on, doesn't know if she cares about who Jack might be having sex with.)

But. It's possible Avery *isn't* using the nanny to spy.

"So," Liz says, smiling at the other woman, "you remember me, right? Because I remember you." She pauses. "I'm not hitting on you."

"I'm sure she didn't believe you were."

Jack places his hand on Liz's elbow, his fingers curving around her. He guides her to Abbey's room -- which Avery and her interior designer created to be "sophisticated but child-friendly and, of course, feminine. I don't want my daughter to become mannish." She paused. "No offense, Liz. But I'm sure you had a gender-neutral room, didn't you?" -- and which isn't that much different from any other baby's room.

(Liz wonders if there's an identical room in Avery's new place.)

His hand is still on Liz's arm as they stand near the crib. Liz looks down at Jack's daughter, tries to think of something to say. But, somehow, she can't break the silence. They return to the living room, and she stays for a bit, through Abbey waking up a couple of times. When she leaves, she doesn't let Jack kiss her goodbye even though his nanny is in another room.

Liz returns the next Saturday, and the Saturday after that. And so on, until it seems like she's part of the weekend visits. Maybe she should be. Maybe she's a big enough part of Jack's life that it's okay to sit in his living room, his baby sleeping in her arms.

(Jack's never called Liz his girlfriend. But she's still sleeping over at his place many nights...

Or maybe being his only friend is enough to justify this.)

One week, when Abbey is three months going on four months, Jack gives Adrina the night off, leaving the two of them to do everything. It's nice, to not have someone else around, to not have to wonder what Adrina thinks. To not duck away from Jack's mouth when he leans down to kiss her. To spend so much time with Abbey. With Jack. To be with a man and a child and feel comfortable, feel like this is something she can do. She can have everything. She's even kind of happy when there's spit-up on her shirt and she has to change into one of his.

(Liz doesn't have any of her own clothes at his house. She hasn't decided if she's making a statement with this decision.)

They have sex that's a mix of lazy and hurried, her hips rocking against him in a slow, steady rhythm as he grinds underneath her, increasing the friction on her clit. After they both come, she's awkwardly draped over his stomach and can't find herself wanting to move. It occurs to her that this is what it's like for parents, stealing quiet moments for sex and feeling exhausted even if said sex isn't as athletic as it has been. This is what it would be like if they were parents of an infant, and that's all this is, isn't it? A simulation. Inserting herself into a life that isn't hers.

She rolls onto her back. Jack's hand covers hers. He shifts to his side, kisses her shoulder.

"That was good, huh? The sex," she says, just to say something. Just to keep her uneasiness from becoming too obvious. "But it's always good, really."

"I know." He kisses her skin again. "Though I appreciate you saying it. I assume 'the sex is always good' isn't something you've told to many men."

"I *have.* I've just been lying."

He kisses her lips. She smiles despite herself.

Abbey starts to cry, and Liz doesn't offer to be the one to check on her; it isn't her place. But, in the morning, when she's in yesterday's jeans and one of Jack's dress shirts, it goes back to feeling right. Natural.

(But the idea persists: she doesn't belong here. None of this belongs to her.)
