Sad. Sad that this seems really realistic now.

Also, it seems like (in fic anyway) when characters think about other ways they could have met, it's usually kind of romantic and poignant and fun. Whereas this is kind of disillusioning and sad, that she'd have to imagine Jack to be a different person in order for her to consider him.

I like it.

This ostensibly should have gone that way, since I recently pondered 'Liz thinks about other ways she and Jack could have met' right after I wrote the non-heavy geologist-in-Alaska fic. (I have, incidentally, been trying to think of other AU ideas, so if anyone has anything they'd like to see...) But somehow when I finally had the impulse to do a little something with the idea, it came out sad. Because, I think, even if Jack and Avery were to split up and Liz decided she thought Jack was the hottest thing since Jon Hamm baking muffins, there would be a lot of reasons she couldn't really consider him as a romantic partner.

Thanks. :)

Sorry. Nothing hotter than Jon Hamm baking muffins.

I liked this. Exactly where they are.

I find Alec Baldwin in general to be hotter than Jon Hamm baking muffins. I do feel sufficiently weird about this!

Thanks; I'm glad it rang true.

First you make me ship things, and then you write sad fanfic!

I hate you!

On this one, I see why you would hate me! Because sad fanfic -- that's not porny -- is kind of a frustrating prospect.

It's true. If it was sad BUT PORNY I might let it go.

Porn does cure most ills. I mean, even if they don't end up together, at least they had some sex. And maybe if they had sex once, they will have it again, and keep doing it until they are happy.

Point is, porn.

But if they did, if they got married, she'd be Avery and have a husband who forgets about their baby.

Ouch. But true.

It's a bummer. :(

I think this post is dead-on, but I don't understand all the woe-is-us how-did-we-get-here comments. This has *always* been Liz's attitude, at least since about the middle of season 1 when she decided he wasn't the devil.

Well, a lot of my bummer attitude about it is that I think Jack has proved himself to be a crappy father, and probably a not great husband, or at least the sort of husband Liz would want, so even a 'settled down' Jack isn't right for Liz. Like, I could concoct these scenarios in my head where Jack could convince Liz they would work together, but I think that time is over now*. Not that he would ever try to romance her on her show, but you know what I mean.

*And I don't think they're right together, which is a bigger bummer for me than whatever attitude Liz could have, since I always thought I'd ship them even though the show would never go there.

I've thought of his fatherhood problems as specific to the fact that it's Avery, with all the issues their relationship brings up.

I've always been at best a half-hearted shipper, so on some days I'd agree that they're not right for each other. But the flip side of that is that I don't see Jack as irrevocably damaged as some other people here.

For the record, though, I think Liz has always been wrong about the kind of man she needs. An ideal mate is complementary rather than identical. One thing I liked about "Double-Edged Sword" was the acknowledgment of that.

I do think that's certainly possible; I have wondered a bit about whether or not things would be as they were if he weren't with Avery. I feel like a different wife would be more involved in their child's life, and encourage him to do the same, but maybe he'd still be this self-involved in the end but another woman not be as accepting of it. I kind of go back and forth ( ... )
