Techie questions

Hi guys - we are leaving for vacation tomorrow and I am trying to get some movies on my iPad. Unfortunately I am not tech savvy. Can I put movies I already own on it somehow? Or is the only thing to do to buy new ones at iTunes? And how can I get baby signing time on here when they don't sell it in the iTunes store? Help!!!

I found a program for my mac (not sure if they have it for pc) called handbrake that does this well. I don't think its tooooo technical. It was free and online, BTW.
