In Chinese, the word for friend is 朋友. 朋 looks like the character for moon (月) a sweet, lovely thought, yes -friendship is two moons together in the dark night.

This, however, is not the case. 朋 actually comes from the character for meat (肉) like two pieces of meat stuck together, like one piece of meat cleaved in twain.

I love Amy Hempel, although her subject matter is somewhat different, she crafts beautiful sentences, and heartaching stories. I also highly enjoy Will Self, who is clever and surreal. Bret Easton Ellis writes some truly crazy things, and he is a great recommendation. But really, I need to read more. XD;

I find it funny that you asked if I liked Chuck Palahniuk before you even had any idea I did. A lot of people tell me that my style sounds a little like his.

oh, no...I found your LJ through a Google search and decided on commenting on this post first, because it caught my eye. Then, I went and read the post involving Chuck Palahniuk. I'm kind of backwards that way.

oh I did not know that~ 朋comes from 肉？That's...very interesting. Maybe actually right since quite a lot of characters concerning meat(??)or human or animal organs or limbs always have 月 as a part of them, like 胳膊(arm) and 肾(kidney). It's funny to connect friends with being meat ~O(∩_∩)O~ we Chinese tend to comprehend the character as 2 people standing side by side holding their hands.Well,what do I know,I'm no linguist after all.
