Mara recently started trialing Kuvan. She's definitely on the young side for starting Kuvan, but I didn't want to wait any longer. Not everyone with PKU is a responder to Kuvan so it isn't like many meds where you take it and it just works. Apparently it depends on the type and severity of your specific PAH gene mutation. spelling test
Michael's fifth grade class takes a spelling test at the beginning of each week using a list of "fifth grade words." If a student makes an error on the original spelling test, then his list for that week will include the misspelled words ( Read more... ) -
hoop dreams
Last year Abby played recreation league basketball as an introduction to the sport. She quite liked it and wanted to play more seriously. This year she tried out for the local travel team and has been their center all year. (She's about 5' 7" and just recently turned 12 ( Read more... ) -
unexpectedly delicious!
Made a breakfast this morning that was just great: fried kale with eggs. Who knew? Had a left over bunch of baby kale in the fridge. Don't let your kale get old. Eat it, and for that matter buy it, when it's nice and firm/crisp ( Read more... ) -
trick or treat
I used to joke that my son Michael (now 10) was preparing for life as an ascetic. He would refuse dessert, save all his money and store away his Halloween candy never to be eaten. I've complained now and again that, while we have a bunch of land, it doesn't *do* anything for us. Recently some wild black raspberries showed up, but nothing else. It's bloody hot today so, rather than cooking at home, I picked up some goodies from the new Flaggstead barbecue in Farmington. Mara update
Wow, Mara is almost 4 months old and we're all smitten with her. I think she's doing well because her growth, esp. head circumference, has been great. Also we've noticed that she's learning and doing new things like vocalizing a lot and playing with toys. And she started rolling over on her own nearly 2 weeks ago! Well, Mara is about 3 months old now, so it seems like I ought to resurface and try to have some adult communication in my life.

Welcome Home!
Got home last night from a great Caribbean cruise vacation with Jerrod and the kids. Jerrod went straight to work in Philadelphia from the airport while the kids and I drove back to CT.
