The Race

Pre-race routine: Carbo load according to the latest research on the subject starting Friday. I was supposed to gain 4 lbs (1 lb carbs, 3 lbs water, based on my weight, resting heart rate, etc.) - I only made it to 3 lbs, it was hard eating so much. Laid out all my stuff the night before, took it easy, went to bed at 9pm. Really didn't fall asleep ( Read more... )

Congratulations! (and, FIRST! :) )

I got a little sentimental reading this, thinking of my first marathon 2 years ago. Last year's was even better. I didn't run this year (not enough time for 20 mile training runs) but next year I'm going to break 4 hours. It's addictive. I don't envy you the pain you'll have over the next week, but trust me, it gets much, MUCH easier next year.

Well done!

Does anyone ever talk about their first marathon and say, "Man, that was easier than I thought!" ? Nah, didn't think so.

After I went to the bathroom. I really wanted to get back in line and go again, but I knew I wouldn't have time. Luckily after a couple miles the urge left me and I was fine until the end of the race.

BTW, I wanted to send a personal thanks to you. Your C25K training originally got me into running myself. Who thought 3 years later I'd finish a marathon!

Not sure. The biggest issue is the time commitment which is hard with a wife who is a nurse with 12 hour shifts and a seven year-old son. I'll definitely keep running in some form though.
