SCHADENFREUDE
VERTIGO
KM Records
Apologies to the band but I misplaced this brilliant single when it arrived, so it’s been out a wee while, but what a monstrously promising thing it is. More punk-inspired indie than the post-punk they refer to in the press release, as the guitar is too sweetly flavoured and there is not enough tension, ‘Vertigo’ is a delightfully springy single with a chorus to roar along to dementedly. The guitar is bright in the intro, then meek but choppy as it surges forward with a Goth-friendly timbre, like an indie version of The Cult early on, much energised. The video is good too, and a must for any Twin peaks fans. Very clever.
‘Your Body’ is so feeble lyrically, like sixth form yearning, that this band still has much to learn, the song merely adequate guitar indie fodder, but the Cure-ish despair of ‘There’s Surely More Than This’ is more enticing with neatly dovetailed sour sentiments, and grows stronger with repeated plays due to the guitar subtlety.
It’s the A-side which is a resounding success, and that’s singles are for.
