Interesting list! I've tried to make my own top-10 list but I
always end up with about 50 and I can't bring myself to take any
of them off. One observation: Your choices are all fairly
contemporary. I think "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) is
probably the oldest. Do you have any special affection for
the older classics, especially from the golden age of the
1930s and 1940s?

I'm not very big on older "classics," actually... They just don't hold the same kind of sway today as they once did, which I think is a comment on today's society and not on the quality of the films themselves, but I am a product of the society.

Take 2001, for example. A great film, but kubrickfan hates the fact that I crack up just about every time I see the passenger space flight. At the time, of course, it was absolutely A-mazing. But from my vantage point when I first saw it, I had personally been on planes a number of times and watched space shuttles take off (and blow up) on TV, and knew of men walking on the moon as a fact. Puts a very different spin on how I view those scenes.

However, I think I definitely need to swap Lost Horizon for something on there...

I saw Return of the King recently for the first time since seeing it in the cinema (in Edinburgh :P), and I realised how contemplative it made me feel. The Two Towers still gets my vote as the best of the three, though.
On my last trip to the UK, I saw Donnie Darko for the first time (the director's cut). Excellent film. Jake Gyllenhaal was fantastic.

I agree with you about 2001. Its space technology is now a little dated. But when I first saw it in the theater it blew ( ... )

I'd love to hear your Top 50 some time. It might give us some things to add to our (way too long) Netflix queue.

You're dead-on for why these movies are on my faves list. No matter how many times I watch them, knowing the "surprises" in the script, I can stil sit and watch even a few moments of them at just about any time and find them truly enjoyable.

OK I'll send you my top 50 list but by e-mail so I don't clog
up your LJ. I'm not sure anyone else is interested. BTW I really have decided what my #1 favorite film is, not because it's a great film -- it isn't -- but because it comes as close to any movie I can think of which captures perfectly who I am and what I'm all about. I'm keeping it close to the vest so I don't want to say what it is now. I've left a note in my will
for my film friends here (we meet regularly to view and discuss
movies) to see it together.
