Chapter 3

After three days of absence, Jungsu finally recovered and appeared at the lesson. He felt nervous to meet Youngwoon for the first time after the incident in dance lesson studio. During the absence, he had got two calls each from Donghae and Hyukjae, and eight calls from Youngwoon, all of those he didn’t answer though. He was afraid to know what Youngwoon would say to him. He looked around the studio nervously looking for his best friend who was supposed to attend this lesson.

“Jungsu hyung! You alright now?”

Jungsu jumped at the place he was standing, but the utterer was not the one he was looking for.

“Donghae, hey”, smiled Jungsu, “Um, do you know where Youngwoon is? He’s taking this lesson, right?”

“Hyung! Don’t you know that? He didn’t tell you yet?”, asked the younger with surprise. “Hyung, there is a big news!”

Donghae gave a bright smile, being excited to be the first person telling a big news to the elder. He whispered into the elder’s ear histrionically though it was no secret for anyone already, but he was disappointed a little because he didn’t get the reaction he was expecting, like a surprised scream or applause of excitement, from the elder one who just stood still like a stone by the news.

“...Hyung? Are you alright?”, asked Donghae, looking into the elder’s empty eyes with concern.

“…Yeah. Of course, I mean, why not. It’s great. Really.”

Jungsu smiled at the younger, but the younger saw the unreadable expression under the smile somehow. Jungsu thanked the younger for informing him, then excused himself and walked out of the studio unsteadily. He wanted to go somewhere quiet to take a fresh breath and think straight. Just then, however, the familiar voice roared from his back and he didn’t mistake it this time.

“Jungsu hyung!”

Youngwoon waved and clawed his way among the crowd to the elder who equipped a weak smile on his face immediately. He clenched his fist tightly to stay composed as seeing the younger one running toward him.

“I got you finally!”

Youngwoon caught up to the elder and breathed hard, maybe not only from the running but the excitement he was holding in his heart.

“Why didn’t you pick my call? I had something to tell you, I-“

“I heard it from Donghae.”

Cutting the younger, Jungsu smiled and gave a tap on the younger’s shoulder.

“Congratulations, Youngwoon-ah! I’m so happy that you’ve finally got a chance!”

The new was that Youngwoon was picked out as a member of upcoming new group along with other three members, Kim Heechul, Chon Yunho and Kim Jaejoong, and the project was gonna be a big one. This news was announced at the next day Jungsu’d got a fever, and all the trainees had been excited about the news since then, leaving Jungsu behind.

“Thank you! I wanted to tell you this first, but you didn’t show up to lessons or answer my call, so… hey, by the way, what was wrong with you? Why did you skip the lessons for days?”
The younger asked innocently, and all Jungsu could do was to say this;

“Nothing. I just had a fever but it’s alright now. You don’t have to give a damn.”

Because, what else he could say? It was perfectly natural that Youngwoon was all happy and spun out on the big project he participated in, and it was definitely true that Jungsu was also happy for the younger to get a great chance. Still, he couldn’t help feeling the disappointment at the fact that when his mind was occupied nothing but with Youngwoon, the younger was cherishing the dream of his bright future, and there was no space spared for Jungsu there. He knew he should not have felt like this, and he was ashamed of himself for not being able to celebrate his best friend with the cloudless heart.

Youngwoon replied with a short “Good then”, and started talking animatedly about the new project and special lessons, which the elder failed to hear actually. Maybe he should be happy, Jungsu thought to himself, because it was apparent that he was the only one who was reading too much in the simple play between friends back in the dance studio at that day, and Youngwoon didn’t care about it at all. He told himself in his heart to forget everything happened at the dance studio and the dream he had had that night. Forget the heat and scent of the younger man.

Jungsu came back from his thought when a gorgeous boy poked his head from a room at the other end of the hallway and shouted.

“Ya! Kim Youngwoon! Bring your ass up here, we gotta have a meeting!”

The said man looked at the direction the roar had come from, and sighed heavily soon after finding the face of his new fellow, Kim Heechul.

“I gotta go, that bastard gets hysterical easily. We can talk later, I have a lot to talk to you!”
Jungsu saw the younger’s back leaving, wondering if he could smile properly.

Friday finally, Jungsu cheered up himself. It was a long week for him since a lot of things happened. He’d got a fever and Youngwoon had been selected as a future star. They didn’t have a chance to meet after the short conversation at the hallway, but it worked good for Jungsu because he had enough time to lock away the unidentifiable feeling toward the younger one and prepare himself for acting properly as a best friend.

Unlike the usual Fridays on which he visited the younger’s apartment, he decided to invite the younger to his room this time. They were very close, the best friends to each other, but it was still rare for him to invite someone to his very private space. He prepared small foods and beer for the night to cerebrate his best friend’s golden future. He was confident he would be able to say “congratulations” from his heart this time.

Jungsu was at the elevator hall as usual after the lessons waiting for Youngwoon when he found the younger coming toward him with Kim Heechul and some guys, talking and laughing cheerfully. As seeing Youngwoon noticed him, indicated the other guys to go first and walked up to him alone, however, Jungsu noticed that something was wrong because he could see the guiltiness on the younger one’s face.

“Were you waiting for me?”

Youngwoon asked, rubbing the back of his head restlessly. Jungsu nodded without a word, the happy feeling filling his heart disappeared rapidly because he soon realized that the younger was not expecting him to do so today.

“Ah, hyung, I’m sorry, but I’m gonna go have some drink with Heechul hyung and his friends tonight, he invited me so… maybe you can come with me, they won’t mind.”

Youngwoon watched the elder’s face uneasily, so Jungsu forced himself to put a fake smile again to offer the younger a reassurance.

“It’s okay, we can meet up anytime. I’m not in a mood for drinking today, but thanks anyway. So, uh, you and Kim Heechul are really getting along well, huh?”

Jungsu asked, trying hard to make his voice sound normal, unshaken.

“Yeah, man, he’s so crazy!”

The younger laughed out, and the smile stabbed the elder in his heart somehow. Without noticing the ache on the elder’s face, Youngwoon went on cheerfully.

“I knew him for his face and many rumors before the project because, you know, he is kind of notorious. I regarded him just as a sissy handsome boy first, but I was so wrong. He’s insane and eccentric and… I mean, he’s really something!”, laughed the younger.

Jungsu also knew Kim Heechul, one-way though, because that guy was already a kind of star and celebrity among the trainees. He could easily imagine how Youngwoon and Heechul got along well, because they were both energetic, outgoing and mischievous. He thought Youngwoon would have a lot fun with Heechul than with him, and the thought made him feel miserable.

“And because Yunho and Jaejoong are together, I and Heechul hyung are like the two left, you know.”

Youngwoon said casually, and it took a moment for Jungsu to realize what that meant, and he slightly blushed.

“Together… means, uh, together? You mean, uh…”, asked the elder hesitantly.

“Oh, yeah, you didn’t know that?”, replied Youngwoon as if it was no big deal.

“No, never… Is it so, uh, open?”

“Nah, I don’t think so. But it is still apparent for some people who have seen them, because I don’t think Jaejoong is so eager to hide his obsession on the other one. It’s so funny when Heechul hyung tries flirting on Yunho in front of Jaejoong! It is exactly a cat fight, it’s so crazy!”

Youngwoon laughed out loud remembering the scene, then noticed the awkwardness on the elder’s face.

“Uh… is this an unpleasant topic for you? I mean, the relationship between men. I’m sorry if it offended you”, said Youngwoon concernedly.

“No! It’s not like that, I was just surprised.”

Jungsu responded quickly, but he felt his hand become sweaty all of a sudden. Hearing the story of Yunho and Jaejoong, he remembered the incident at the dance studio and the dream at that day without any reason, or maybe there was some reason but he didn’t give a further thought here, and it made him confused.

“Good then. Anyway, I’ll make up for today soon. Next time, you can pick a DVD and I’ll cook for you.”

Youngwoon promised with a big smile. Jungsu smiled back weakly, trying hard to hide the disappointment filling his small heart.

The next time never came up, however. Because the younger one kept himself busying with the hours of specialized dance lessons and voice trainings everyday, Jungsu never had a chance to meet or talk to him. He rarely even got a glance of the younger one’s existence for weeks because a room was prepared for the group and the members were stuck in there all the time.

The less the time sharing with Youngwoon got, the more Jungsu thought about him. He couldn’t remember how he had spent the time between or after lessons without his best friend, so he merely killed those times by listening to music with earphones, rejecting the outside world to touch him. He never went out with anybody. Instead, he locked himself in his small apartment and watched some DVDs alone, though he couldn’t concentrate on the stories at all.

He’d got to smile less, sleep less. Donghae and Hyukjae noticed the visible dark circles under his eyes and showed their concerns, but Jungsu simply thanked them and insisted everything was just fine, though they all knew that was a lie.

At those sleepless nights, he thought about Youngwoon. He thought of the younger man’s warmth, scent and laughter. And everytime he thought about Youngwoon, his heart ached and made it difficult to breathe.

...to be continued.
