Chapter 1

“Oh, here it is, finally!”

Jungsu looked up from the map in his hand and sighed in relief, spotting the plate which was saying “South Seoul High School” on the top of the gate in front of him. It took more than an hour for him to find the destination though it must have taken only 15 minutes if he had not been awfully lacking the sense of direction. It was lucky for him to have decided to make a preliminary inspection, because he could never be late on the first day, which was to be tomorrow, at his new workplace. Park Jungsu, a teacher of Korean literature, smiled and passed through the small gate.

Once in the school field, Jungsu was burying his face in the map again, this time in the school-map sent to him several days ago. The map and the scene before his eyes didn’t match at all, and he felt like to whine. It was six in the evening already and he couldn’t see the figures of students nor teachers anywhere in his sight. He wandered through the buildings and ran into a gymnasium, then a loud voice roared from his back.

“Ya! What are you doing here?”

Jungsu looked back and smiled happily because he finally encountered a living creature around this field. There was a big guy in Judo uniform who was carrying some mattresses into the tool next to the gymnasium. Judging from his muscular frame and outfit, Jungsu concluded the guy must be a PE teacher.

“Hello, uh, p-please don’t get suspicious, I’m just lost here, it’s my first day and, uh… Oh! I’m, I’m Park Jungsu, I’m new here and, uh…”

Jungsu stammered here and there because he was desperate to prove that he was not a shady intruder but an innocent guy who just lost his way. And it miraculously worked in the good way for him somehow, because he could see the frown on the other guy’s face disappeared and was taken place by the burst of laughter.

“Calm down, man! I’m not gonna eat you up or something, it’s just rare to see people around here. This area is always deserted but for our club team members.”

The big guy pointed at his uniform and smiled. Jungsu was relieved by the friendly attitude of the other one and found that he strangely liked the way the guy laughed, those crescent eyes and teethy smile. The guy looked the same age as him, maybe a bit older than him, and Jungsu was happy that he could meet the colleague who was around his age and companionable at his new working place.

“And you said you’re lost?”, the guy asked.

“Yes, I have a map but it seems incorrect.”

Jungsu showed the map to the guy. The guy looked into it, frowned and laughed out again.

“Hey, I think you were seeing the map up-side-down. I mean, the gate you passed through was not the main gate but the back one.”

As explaining, the guy indicated the map and the backside toward the gate. Jungsu blushed from head to toe instantly. He hated himself for being such a fool in front of his positive-colleague at their first encounter. Meeting the strangers had never been the favorite thing for him, he was always too shy and reserved to get along well with people.

“I, I see…”

Jungsu snatched the map from the guy’s hand and pushed it into his back pocket. He wanted to disappear into the air right here, right now.

“Maybe you wanna got to the teacher’s office, I guess? For the procedure or something? I’ll show you the way, because you seem a terrible map reader!”, smiled the guy.

“Thank you so much, how kind of you!”

Jungsu couldn’t believe his luck for meeting someone so kind and likable on the first day of his new life. He didn’t notice he was staring the guy with the teary eyes, fully admired.

“It’s… it’s okay, it’s nothing, I mean… Hey, I’m Youngwoon, Kim Youngwoon, by the way.”

Youngwoon held out his hand.

“I’m Park Jungsu. Nice to meet you, Mr.Kim.”

Jungsu took the hand with his and smiled.

“Please! Just call me Youngwoon, ok? I’ll call you Jungsu.”

“Fine, then, Youngwoon. I’m lucky you’re the first person I met at this school!”

As walking along to the office, they chatted small things about the school and the town. They discovered that Jungsu’s new apartment was not that far from Youngwoon’s house, and the bigger one promised that he would show around the town anytime soon. Jungsu felt his heart skipped in excitement.

They were almost reaching to the main building when they found a large figure approaching to them. Youngwoon recognized the person and laughed to Jungsu.

“It is Mr.Shin, a PE teacher. Too fat to be a PE teacher, though.”

Youngwoon giggled jokingly.

“PE teacher?”, frowned Jungsu. “I thought you were the one.”

“Me?”, frowned Youngwoon this time. “What do you mea-“

“Heeeeey!”

Before Youngwoon could finish his word, the said PE teacher dashed to them and beamed a big smile.

“Hello! I’m Shin Donghee, a PE teacher of this school! You must be Mr.Park, right? I saw your picture on your resume. I heard you’re specialized in literature?”

Mr.Shin talked fast and furious, which made Jungsu taken aback a bit.

“N-Nice to meet you, Mr.Shin. And yes, I’m supposed to take charge of Korean literature classes.”

Because he was facing to Mr.Shin, he didn’t notice Youngwoon opened his mouth with surprise.

“Nice to meet you, too! And ya, Kim Youngwoon! Are you guiding Mr.Park to the office? I didn’t know you’re such a good student! Ha ha!”

Mr.Shin patted Youngwoon on his back and laughed out loud, innocently unaware that he just put his new colleague into a great confusion. Jungsu knitted his eyebrows.

A student!?

Before Jungsu could make an action, Mr.Shin found two students across the ground who were trying to climb over the fence to shortcut the way, and ran toward them shouting something not-so-teacher-like thing at the bad pupils.

Silence fell between the left two before Youngwoon looked into Jungsu’s face and chuckled.

“Mr.Park, a literature teacher. What a surprise!”, laughed a now-turned-out student.

“You, you didn’t say you’re a student!”

Jungsu yelled. He blushed in panic, realizing that he had made a big mistake.

“Why did I have to? I’m a young boy who is in the school, isn’t it just so obvious that I’m nothing but a student?”

Youngwoon smirked. It was apparent that the young boy found the situation fun in contrast to Jungsu.

“But you are taller and… bigger than me, and…”

Jungsu murmured, his voice got smaller and smaller as speaking. He mentally accused himself for jumping onto the conclusion without any solid reason.

“Those are not my fault, and you’re just too thin and baby-faced. How old are you?”, asked Youngwoon.

“I’m twenty seven”, replied Jungsu with a pout.

“You can’t be! You look rather younger than me! And why are you wearing white shirt? It looks like a school uniform!”

Youngwoon pointed at the other one’s perfectly pressed white shirt.

“Just because I love white!”

Jungsu claimed, then he saw Mr.Shin coming back to them across the ground.

“Um, look, I’m sorry for misunderstanding. Let’s just… forget we met here today, and restart as a teacher and a student tomorrow morning, ok? I don’t want to make our relationship, I mean, the relationship with a student, something awkward.”

Jungsu smiled at the young boy weakly. He actually wanted to beg the young boy to foreget that he had got lost in the school and almost cried like a baby, but his small piece of dignity as a teacher prevented him from doing it. So he let out a big sigh of relief when Youngwoon flushed an innocent smiled and replied with “Why not, Mr.Park”.

Just then, Mr.Shin walked up to the entrance of main building and indicated Jungsu to follow him to inside.

“I think I have to go, thank you for your kindness, anyway.”

Jungsu was already leaving when he heard the low voice answered from his back with a hint of smirk in there.

“See you soon, Jungsu.”

Jungsu looked back instantly, but all he could see was the board back of the young boy leaving into the darkness of the evening.

… to be continued.
