Actually Loki was not considered one of the Aesir and was not even a god. He was an Etin.

He was sort of grandfathered in, though, due to being a blood brother of sorts with Odin...which is how he got away with shenanigans for so long. That said, the Aesir weren't all that particular about how they mingled in the first place, with the entire pantheon being a literal marriage of Aesir and Vanir.
