CHARACTER NAME: Angelica Jones // Firestar
FANDOM: Marvel 616
CHRONOLOGY: Post-Marvel Divas #3
CLASS: Semi-retired super-heroine.
SUPERHERO NAME: Firestar
ALTER EGO: Angelica Jones, college student
BACKGROUND:
Angelica Jones was born in New Jersey and was raised by her single father, Bart, and her grandmother. Bart worked as a nuclear technician at power plants, and while he was skilled at his job, work was difficult to find and not always permanent. As a result, the family moved quite often, and Angelica had attended six or seven schools by the time she was thirteen. Although the family was not well off, life was idyllic for the girl. In most ways, Angelica was an average girl until a series of unfortunate events bechanced her during her thirteenth year.
Angie had always been considered her teacher's pet, scoring high marks in school. This made her a target for school bullies, and once 9th grade rolled around, she found herself an outcast. She was quiet, mostly keeping to herself, and she had a special love for art and sculpting. She also caught the attention of the star of the football team. She found comfort and solace with her grandmother, confiding her troubles to her, but just a few months into the new school year, her grandmother suddenly passed away. Angelica became depressed and even more withdrawn. And to make matters worse, she suddenly started to display strange abilities. Her power to generate heat was alarming not only to her, but to her father as well. Unsure of what to do with his increasingly despondent (and dangerous) daughter, he eagerly allowed Angelica to attend the Massachusetts Academy, run by mutant headmistress Emma Frost.
Unknown to Mister Jones, and to Angelica, the Massachusetts Academy was a front for the Hellfire Club, a secret organization with dubious intentions. Emma Frost intended for Angelica to join her mutant team, the Hellions, and began training her to control her powers, which were discovered to be microwave based. Frost gave Angelica the codename Firestar and cast herself as a caring, devoted instructor, all the while grooming her to become an assassin and bodyguard. Angie remained innocent and unaware of the Academy's connections to the Hellfire Club and came to view Emma as a maternal figure. Unfortunately for Emma (and fortunately for Angelica) Firestar's powers remained unpredictable and difficult to completely control, and Emma felt Angelica lacked the cruelty needed to become a full member of the Hellions. As a result plans to add her to the Hellions line up were delayed.
However, she was manipulated into aiding the Hellions in their attack on the Xavier Institute by Empath and Thunderbird. Luckily the attack was unsuccessful, and Prof. Xavier understood that Angelica's emotions had been controlled. He offered her a spot at the Xavier Institute, though she declined out of loyalty to Emma Frost. Soon after though, Angelica learned of Emma's nefarious plans, and in retaliation, Angelica burned the Hellion's training facility to the ground and fled back to New Jersey, taking her costume and codename with her.
Angelica was happy to resume her life back home in New Jersey, and for several months she led a normal life, attending public high school and making new friends. Of course, this period of reprieve was short lived, and she soon found herself blackmailed into joining the New Warriors. While the circumstances of her recruitment were less than pleasant, she found the team members to be likable, and they worked well together, fighting against second rate super villains around New York and later around the world and in outer space.
Over time, she developed a romance with New Warriors member Vance Astrovik (Marvel Boy/Justice.) The two were very young and very much in love, and soon they became engaged. However their relationship had its share of trials. Angie's father Bart was shot in the chest and nearly died from his injuries, and soon after Vance was sent to prison for manslaughter after accidentally killing his own father during a domestic dispute. Further complicating matters was the realization that her microwave based powers were filling her body with radiation, which was slowly damaging her internal organs. Most upsetting, she was at a very high risk of becoming infertile through the further use of her powers.
Firestar and the New Warriors had several memorable battles during that period, including an important team up with Spider-Man that resulted in her personally defeating the villain Carnage. She proved to have more and more control over her powers, and to be highly competent in battle. This eventually led to an invitation to join the Avengers as a reserve member.
Firestar was initially invited to be a reserve member of the Avengers, though she and Vance were both quickly incorporated into the main group ranks. During this period she consulted Hank Pym regarding her continuing radiation sickness and it was discovered that she possessed no natural immunity to her own microwave powers. Doctor Pym was able to design a special suit for her to wear for six months, one that would jump start her immunity and ease the radiation effects on her body.
She also enrolled in college at this time, focusing her studies on art history. This caused a rift to form between Vance and herself, however, as she realized that she was too young to get married. Their engagement was broken off, and their romantic relationship fizzled. Soon after, she chose to leave the Avengers and rejoin the New Warriors, preferring the company of her old friends to the stressful life as a high profile heroine.
Following the mutant decimation of M-Day, Angelica was one of the 198 mutants left with her powers. She became less and less enthralled with the life she was leading, especially after the New Warriors started work on a reality TV show. Firestar was not a regular on the program, only making a few appearances before the fateful and tragic incident in Connecticut.
Angelica was both enraged and heartbroken by the events of the Civil War, especially at the portrayal of her New Warriors team mates by the media. After much contemplation, she responded to the SRA by throwing away her mask and costume and retiring from heroics. Angie engrossed herself in college life, living a quiet life for the duration of the Civil War. During this time she formed close friendships with Monica Rambeau (Photon), Felicia Hardy (Black Cat), and Patsy Walker (Hellcat). The four of them developed a routine of having drinks every week, and for the first time in years, Angie found herself to be very happy.
But of course, fate would deal her a cruel hand. Though she was still very young and in college, Angelica learned that she had breast cancer. Apparently the same radiation poisoning that had threatened her body before had recurred and caused the tumors in her body. Angie was afraid, though she was supported by her friends, Patsy in particular, and after chemotherapy and surgery, her cancer went into remission.
She heads into her new life with a new outlook. She's still recovering from cancer, yet she's resumed her crime fighting career, readopting the alias of Firestar.
PERSONALITY:
Angelica is the kind of girl every mother dreams their son will bring home. She's sweet, good natured, and generally wholesome, known widely as being a good girl. Bright and cheerful, she is quick with a kind word and is genuinely happy to help people. She's modest, occasionally shy, having always wanted to grow up to be a wife and mother more than anything else. She's a bit of a romantic, dreaming of having a fairy tale life, no matter how unrealistic that prospect may seem. The fact that she won't be able to have children devastates her, though she isn't likely to speak of it to anyone she isn't close to. She has deep maternal instincts, though, and she enjoys caring for others in need.
Her genuine niceness has sometimes been seen as a disadvantage. Others have observed that she seems to not have a mean bone in her body, though when the situation calls for it, Angelica can be tough as nails. But she lacks cruelty and vindictiveness, even when dealing with her enemies. She truly believes in the goodness of others and strives to bring the goodness out in those she meets. She loves jokes and laughing, and is often found in the company of pranksters and jokesters, though she is less likely to participate in them than just observe. She is very determined and can be extremely protective of those she cares about. She can be emotional, sometimes overly so, but generally she is quiet and reserved with those she is unfamiliar with.
Angie's friendly nature allows her to form friendships easily, and despite her young age, she has widespread connections across the superhuman community, counting the former Hellions, X-Men, New Warriors, and Avengers amongst her closest companions. However she can sometimes be overly sensitive and end up with hurt feelings. She is significantly younger than most of her friends, and while she has always been mature, she lacks some of the life experience that other heroes, the Avengers in particular, would have. This sometimes has her feelings slighted or left out.
She is protective of the New Warriors, probably to a fault. The Stamford incident is a touchy subject for her. She lost some of her closest and dearest friends, and despite the popular negative view on the New Warriors, she would defend them with her last breath.
She's also incredibly feisty. She's not a push-over by any means, and she's not willing to allow herself to be defeated by anything. She will stand up for herself against any enemy, and for those who need her help. Likewise, she refuses to let her illness (or her fear) defeat her.
Her battle with cancer has changed her perspective on life. She's more emotional, and more open with her fears. She clings to those around her, seeking strength through her friends. She still cares for Vance, and the fact that he hasn't paid her any attention during her illness has been a major blow to her. She won't be defeated, but this battle has been very tough on her, and she openly grieves what has happened to her life and her body.

Marvel Wikia.
Angelica is a mutant with the ability to generate, absorb, and manipulate microwave radiation, allowing her to give off heat and light and allowing her flight. She taps into the Earth's magnetic field and converts it into microwave radiation. She constantly absorbs microwave energy and radiates them herself at all times. Angelica is able to heat objects until they explode, burst into flames or melt by mentally pushing the microwaves and bending them to her will. She can sense the electromagnetic spectrum and has limited immunity to the effects of microwave emissions, and is able to disrupt electronics using microwave radiation.
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE: [Angelica's transmission begins with a deep, strangled breath. It's obvious that she is in tears, even as she tries to calm herself down enough to speak.]
Vance?
[Her voice cracks as she speaks, and she snorts back a sob.]
Vance? Please tell me you're here. Please. Vance, if you can hear me, please answer me. I can't... don't play this game.
...
Patsy?
[She nearly chokes out Patsy's name, and for several seconds afterward, she doesn't say anything as she tries to pull herself together. Then, quite suddenly screen flickers on, showing a pale, gaunt looking woman staring into the camera. Most notably, she has no hair--a side effect of her chemotherapy. She looks absolutely devastated, and even to those who know her, it might take a moment to realize that this frail looking woman is the super heroine Firestar.]
This is a nightmare. It has to be. This is the medication. I'm hallucinating.
[She doesn't sound convinced. Even more damning are the tears now streaming down her cheeks.]
I just got out of surgery, I... I can't be here. I need my doctor. I want my doctor. I don't want to play this game. I want to go home.
I'm not asking for a miracle, I'm really not. But I... I need some help. Someone please, help me.
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
Coming out of surgery is a surreal experience for anyone. No matter what the procedure, one is sure to feel a mess of emotional and physical effects come over them. At first, it's a light headed, loopy, weightless feeling. Disorienting. Dizzying. The world moves in a slow motion cycle, senses returning to normal in a strange elliptical pace. Then, suddenly, the world stops spinning and the memories of why doctors were slicing and cutting with the knives return. And then all those airy, doped up feelings are replaced by something else, something heavy and overwhelming. It's sobering and somber, and above all, it is frightening.
Twelve hours ago, Angelica Jones was lying in a hospital bed drowning in these thoughts. Her whole world was cancer. Life revolved around doctor's appointments and rounds of chemotherapy and falling asleep on Patsy Walker's sofa, having cried herself to sleep. A shell of herself, even her eyes seemed to dim under the strain of the chemical treatments, the sparkle in her smile was starting to fade. She was weak, she was sick, and she knew it.
Sixteen hours ago, she was signing a waiver, telling the surgeons they had permission to remove her breast if the cancer had spread.
She woke up in the recovery room. She remembered it so clearly despite the haze of lingering anesthesia. The doctor had told her the surgery had gone swimmingly, that the results would be back in a few days. She should rest, sleep, drink water, all those things doctor's tell someone on bed rest to do.
She remembered asking for Vance. And she recalled the nurse patting her shoulder softly, like her grandmother used to when she was small. The nurse smiled, too, as they gave her another dose of morphine to ease her back into sleep.
That was twelve hours ago.
She woke up in a daze. Not the pleasant, fluttering medicine daze, either. it was more of a jolt, followed by a sudden sense of panic and a strange realization that she wasn't in her hospital room anymore.
Her legs were weak from the drugs and the sleep. Her entire body felt like it was made of jello, and even though somehow she was standing, she was certain that if she tried to take a step forward, she would collapse onto the ground. Which looked dirty and cold, and not at all appealing, especially since she was still wearing her hospital gown. Each step was wobbly, uneven, unaided by the uncontrollable shivering the sent her entire body quaking. Somehow, someway, she made it to an exit, and mustering every last ounce of her energy, she pushed the heavy door open and stumbled outside.
The sun hit her hard, rays warming her body, though she couldn't seem to stop her teeth from chattering. It didn't matter though, her legs would give first. She needed to lie down, and if she couldn't lie, she would sit.
Heavily, panting, she slumped onto the nearest bench, communicator clenched loosely in her fist. It was drenched in sweat from her palm, clammy and thoroughly gross, but she needed help, she needed to talk to someone other than the useless machines.
Vance. She wanted Vance. Or Nita. Or Patsy. Someone to pick her up and take her to the hospital. In her state, she just couldn't fly there on her own.
Slowly, fingers shaking from the drugs, pain, and terror, she dialed in the first number; Vance's number.
"We're sorry. The number you have dialed is not in service. Please check the number and try again."
Angie's heart leapt, it stopped beating for a few solid seconds. That was wrong, that couldn't be right. Again, she tried.
"We're sorry. The number you have dialed is not in service. Please check the number and try again."
No panicking, she couldn't let herself get flustered. But rapidly her nerves were becoming more frazzled and her body was literally vibrating as she sobbed. No answers. No nothing. Just pre-recorded operators and dead air. Angelica was alone, and today was shaping up to be the most terrifying day of her life.
FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
At the point in canon I am taking her from, Angelica has just come out of surgery for breast cancer and it is actually unclear if the surgery has been effective or not. If this needs to be altered, or if you would prefer that I take her from the end of the Marvel Divas miniseries, I am more than happy to adjust this.
