Music meme (continued at last!)

To Zanarkand (orchestral version) is one of the emotionally saddest pieces I've come across. I was in debate about which song to use in this entry, because I have many songs which could potentially make me weep given the right circumstances. I eventually narrowed it down to two songs, one being To Zanarkand from Final Fantasy X and the other being a song I'd first heard on House M.D.. The House M.D. song will be used later, because it invokes certain images in my mind, but to Zanarkand can, and has, made me weep just from being carried along by the sweeping movements of the music.
There is a higher quality recording of this orchestral version out there from the 2005 Japan tour, but this Distant Worlds performance by the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra envokes more emotion for me personally. It's something I've been thinking about because the Japanese are technically brilliant at classical music. I'm not saying they don't have strong emotion for music but... hrrrrrrrrrrrrrm. Okay, well let me put it this way.
You go and listen to rock or pop bands in Japan and you can rest assured that passion for music is not something the Japanese are lacking (L'Arc~en~Ciel? They drove me to tears with a song that wasn't even that sad when I saw them live - the emotion was that strong). Classical music however is a tradiationally very formal genre of music, treated with great respect and reverence the world over. However, tradiational and formal in Japan also often equates to precise, tempered and controlled. It's something that's linked to their culture, and is far from a fault, as their courtesy and respect is practically unparalleled, but I noticed it was a reoccuring trend in Japanese Classical music performances.
Who cares if sometimes the conductor drags out the note for an extra half a beat because the emotion calls for it? So a crescendo wasn't in the first quarter on the CD but was included in the live performance, big deal! Part of the reason I go to live Classical music performances is to get swept away by it. Part of me, though biased, will always think that Europe is the home of Classical music.
