We were pouring sand into the well... think a 3cm diameter pipe. The water level was at about 20m down and the bottom was about 100m down, so 80m of the way, the sand was falling through water. We were using the water level tape to sound the bottom of the well as the sand fell, because it can't fall through water as fast as it can through air. But we didn't pull the water level tape up fast enough, and the tip of it got buried by the falling sand and we couldn't pull it out. So we had to cut it, rendering it useless and leaving 100m of it still down the well.
That's the first part.
The second part is, the sand got poured down too fast and clogged the pipe at 11m below the ground (technical term is 'bridged'), instead of falling down all of the 100m like it was supposed to. The water is down at 20m, but we can't get at it because the sand is clogging the pipe at 11m.
