Somebody else's post got me thinking. I'm looking for people's thoughts on whiskey. What do you like? What do you dislike? Are there particular whiskeys that are better for particular situations

I tend to drink either Crown Royal or Wiser's. I've found Wisers is much better straight up then Crown is - and yes, it does work well in Emotional Instability. I may be in the process of totally switching over to Wisers - since I like it better straight up, I'm not sure why I would play more money for Crown if I was going to be using it in mix drinks.
I too have moved on from CC - if you're drinking mixed rye drinks at a bar, you're probably drinking CC and that's about the only time I drink it. I have heard nothing but good things about Forty Creek. waiwode, lord_mongol and htisme sing the praises of Forty Creek. I've had it once in ginger with them, and it was pretty good.
I'm honestly not that much of a whiskey drinker, as I find anything over about 30% to be too strong for me, as I don't enjoy consuming beverages in tiny sips. I have been known to gently mull over Grand Marnier when someone else is buying, though, and if I must choose a brown liquor to be consumed on its own, I prefer amber rum or brandy.
I used drink Manhattans, though. I found Gibson's "finest" (a term I use liberally) generally the best for home mixing. I never found out what Ethel's put in their Manhattan, but it was the best one I ever got in KW (I suspect they actually had really good vermouth).
Having done the bartending thing, for drinking straight, I'd stay far away from anything legal in the speed rail (the cheap stuff we put up front to mix drinks fast). Whiskey-wise, this means J&B, C.C., Royal Reserve, Jim Beam, and Ballantines (to name a few). Jack Daniels actually isn't terrible, Cutty Sark I actually found to be OK, and anything Irish has a low chance of sucking.
Had an Ethel's Manhattan tonight. I'd agree with your 'Best in KW' assessment, but my only basis for comparison is Molly Bloom's (who leave the ice in), and my own home mixes (incredibly overstrength, no cherry).

I've never been big into scotch.
