Nope. Must be some weird-ass northeastern tradition or something.

My new years tradition usually involves making plans to do something fun, those plans falling through, then staying home to watch Graham Norton on telly or something.

Yours sounds more fun though.

First Footing is a great tradition to carry on - especially if you have a party and get someone decent and dark-haired to snog.

In my neck of the woods they bring coal, bread, silver and salt.

my family used to do something remotely similar, when i was younger. a few minutes before midnight we'd all go outside the front door. as soon as it was midnight, either me or my sister stepped in the front door (first footer) which welcomed the new year. whoever was the first footer got 50p off our parents (woo!) then we all went back inside.
we stopped doing that when me and my sister became teenagers and buggered off with our friends for new year, rather than with our families...

You're supposed to have a tall dark stranger come through the door with coal and some cash... but I never heard of chucking the blokes outside. That's mean it's fucking freezing.

Yeah, that's what they all say, too ;)

I think our family is aware of the coal tradition too, but generally don't adhere to it. Probably because nobody can be arsed looking for some coal.

Yeah, we used to do something similar when I was a kid , it was always me that got kicked out just before midnight with a lump of coal in my hand, even though my dad was taller, but he was bald and it was supposed to be someone with dark hair.
