“I still can’t believe I let you talk me into this. You should be back on the ship, not waiting here with me.” McCoy shifts his weight from one foot to the other, looking about as uncomfortable as he can be, but Jim doesn’t care-it’s their first bit of leave since taking command of the Enterprise and nothing can bring him down off this kind of high. Not even the prospect of having to encounter the former Mrs. McCoy.

“Relax, Bones.” He smacks his best friend’s shoulder playfully, ignoring the glare he receives in return. “It’s been six years-how much of a grudge can she hold?”

McCoy opens his mouth to give a more-than-likely sarcastic retort but is silenced by the loud cry of “Daddy!” from across the docking bay. Joanna McCoy is the spitting image of the father she clearly loves, judging by the look of absolute joy on her small face. Jim can’t help but notice that something in his friend relaxes when his daughter launches herself into his waiting arms-the tension leaks out of McCoy’s face and suddenly his chief medical officer looks ten years younger as he twirls his daughter around in the air, smiling and laughing as she peppers his face with kisses.

But Jim knows that his unfettered joy won’t last long and he can’t help the protective urge towards his chief medical officer that rises in him at the sight of the woman who is walking towards them, her sour expression clearly indicating her dislike of this whole situation.

“Hello Leonard." Her tone is flat and Jim fights back a growl when he sees McCoy’s smile fade as he puts Joanna down, though he never lets go of her hand. To her credit, Joanna ignores her mother, settling on clinging to her father in a way that makes Jim more than a little bit wistful for what he missed in this lifetime.

“Jocelyn.” McCoy’s voice is tight with restrained dislike and he pulls Joanna just a little closer, clearly suspicious of her motives. “We’ll be back in a week.”

She's caught sight of now Jim and is scowling, looking between him and McCoy with ill-disguised disgust. “Is this your boyfriend?”

“Captain James T. Kirk, USS Enterprise,” Jim says over McCoy’s stammered protests, sticking out a hand for Jocelyn to shake, which she ignores in favor of giving her ex-husband a dirty look.

“I should have known.” Her contempt for them is clear and Jim knows McCoy is close to shouting something he’ll regret, by the way his free hand is clenched into a fist. Joanna clearly knows this as well because she puts her free hand over her father’s and fakes a yawn. McCoy’s attention is immediately on his daughter and he lifts her up into his arms.

“Joceyln.” With a nod, McCoy turns and walks towards the shuttle, leaving his fuming ex-wife in his wake. When she turns her attention to Jim, he merely shrugs and waves his fingers at her.

“I’d say you don’t know what you’re missing, but clearly you do. See you in a week!” and with one last cheeky grin, Jim follows McCoy to the shuttle, ignoring the sputtering curses coming from behind him.

When they get back to the Enterprise, Joanna wants to see the bridge and Jim can’t deny the adorable pout she gives him. Briefly, he wonders if Bones would ever pout like that to get something he wanted, and has to quickly push that thought away before his pants decide to shrink a size or two. Thankfully, the bridge is deserted except for them, the rest of the crew enjoying their well-deserved leave while the Enterprise is docked for repairs, and no one is around to watch Jim let Joanna sit in his chair and pretend to command the Enterprise while he sits at the helm and ‘fires’ the phasers on her command. Bones just watches his daughter play spaceship captain with an easy grin until Joanna yawns for real and he puts an end to their playtime. Jim trails behind them as McCoy takes his daughter to his quarters, making silly faces at Joanna the whole way.

For once, Jim doesn’t have a witty remark to give as he watches McCoy tuck Joanna in, kissing her forehead with a gentleness he’s never seen in his friend before. To his surprise, instead of falling asleep right away Joanna starts to pout, directing that potent expression in his direction.

“I want a story, Uncle Jim.” Clearly, she is a girl after his own heart-knows what she wants and doesn’t care what she has to do to get it. When he grins and pulls up a chair next to her bedside, he makes the mistake of looking up at Bones, who is staring back at him as though Jim has suddenly grown another head. Instead of commenting, Jim merely launches into a tale of a young boy who stole his stepfather’s prized car and nearly drove off a cliff to escape a police officer. He’s knows that McCoy doesn’t approve of him telling this story to his impressionable daughter, but Jim is pretty sure this is the most appropriate story he has to tell, especially for the ears of an eight year old. His sexual escapades are not an appropriate bedtime story.

Joanna drifts off halfway through the tale and it takes Jim a moment to realize he’s sitting there with a silly grin on his face, watching this little girl take deep, even breaths. Fuck, he never even liked kids before today, and now he’s seriously thinking he might steal this one and keep her aboard the ship. He needs a partner in crime and he’s pretty sure her pout might even work on Spock. They’ll have to try that one, if she’s still here when the pointy-eared bastard comes back from his leave.

McCoy clears his throat softly and Jim reluctantly stands, following him out of his sleeping quarters and into the dimmed lights of the hallway. They’re both silent for a moment before Bones finally speaks, his voice soft.

“Why did you let Jocelyn think you and I were-” he can’t quite finish the sentence and Jim grins, feeling suddenly daring. Like Joanna, he knows what he wants.

“Because I like the idea of you having to thank your ex-wife for this.” Before Bones can react, Jim is kissing him, one hand cupping his friend’s stubbled cheek. McCoy stiffens under him and for a brief second, Jim thinks he might have gotten this one wrong and then McCoy is pressing him against the wall, his tongue slipping into Jim’s mouth as thought it belongs there, which Jim is pretty sure it does. When they finally part for air, there’s a moment of silence before McCoy puts his lips to Jim’s ear.

“We’re going to have to go to your quarters if you want to finish what you just started.”

Jim is halfway down the hallway, dragging Bones by the arm, before he’s even done speaking.
