I learned the easy way first and the hard way later that people (including me) are not going to learn what they don't want to know. It is entirely possible that friends hinted to you what your SO was doing and you did not heed the hinting. If you found out that you had a friend who's SO was cheating, as of today, would you tell them?
You are correct, people do not hear what they don't wish to know. This would explain the reaction of my friend all those years ago. It's also very possible that my friends had hinted to me for many years, or maybe I actually saw the signs, but chose to ignore them.
