so i'm genetically racist....sorta
wondering what was going on with the civil war in sri lanka, i decided to read up.
so here is my discovery...the Tamil perspective::::: in 1948 singhalese people moved into the Tamil lands, tamil people being people who are muslim or hindu, i dont know which one. anyways as the moved into these villages the singhalese army forced the tamils out of the lands that they resided in. in 1956 what they called the "sinhala only act" was introduced, which i'm sure you could guess what it means. tamils organized a gandhi like sit down, only to be broken up violently by the army. in 1972 sri lanka said fuck you to the tamil people and their education, denying them admittance. in 1977 the tamil people came together to establish their own state/country called "eelam" only to be met with fierce opposition.
here is one of hte most honorable things about sri lanka... in 1983 genocide was now in effect. "Once the Tamil homes were identified the occupants were either hacked or burnt to death, and the properties were plundered." of course there was fighting on both sides and i've seen pictures of people with their heads cut off and limbs missing, but come on. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was the group of fighters who fought the sri lankan army. tigers because the sri lankan mascot is a lion.
and all the pride i once found in this flag of my homeland is somewhat reduced now...
The flag is divided by race, "the green represents the Muslim population because their religious colour is green. The orange beside the green represents the Tamil population because orange is the Hindu religious colour. The biggest section and their one containing their national symbol is the red representing the Sinhalese population."
"Sri Lanka's policy of racist division is extends all the way from its national flag, which disproportionately represents its people, to the fact that all citizens must carry Identity Cards at all times. These identity card state not only your name, age and picture but also your race. Other documents such as your Birth Certificate must bear your race, that of your parents and grandfather."

the sri lankan perspective:::::::the tamils came down and began residing in the northern tip of sri lanka. in order to define their presence, they attacked the singhalese people. so thats how the whole civil war started. the tamil's want to claim about 1/3 of hte land and for about 30 years have claimed that 1/3 portion of land as "Tamil Eelam."
i dont know. maybe if, well i really dont know. i wish i knew more about the culture around me. i wish i could speak singhalese. i wish there was no fighting there, and hopefully they are compromising now. both sides have their stories and i have loyalty to the sri lankan story. but i dont know the definite truth. so oh well.
