Double Edge

Prologue

"Yu-chan!! Yu-chan!! Look here!!"

The little girl ran up to the boy, calling out his name. She was carrying a small blue ball and placed it onto the ground.

She looked at the little boy with the short dark hair, whom they called Yu-chan. "Let's play, Yu-chan!!"

"Okay!!" Yu-chan replied, smiling at her, his front teeth missing.

They started kicking the ball back and forth between each other, running around and laughing.

Suddenly, Yu-chan fell to the ground as three boys came up to them and one of them shoved him to the ground.

"Ouch!" Yu-chan yelped. "Mi-chan..." He moaned as tears suddenly started forming in his eyes.

The little girl rushed and knelt down beside him. "Are you okay, Yu-chan?" She stood up and faced the tall boys who pushed Yu-chan. "Hey!! Why did you push him? That wasn't nice!!"

The other boy came up to her and gave her shoulder a shove. "Because we can!!" He stuck his tongue out. "You can't play here!! This is our spot!"

"Says who?" Mi-chan yelled at him.

"Me!" The largest boy lunged forward and pushed Mi-chan to the ground.

Mi-chan fell down on the ground as the boys laughed at her.

"Oi!! You three!!" An older boy, taller than all of them, came barging in. He grabbed the three boys back by their shirts. "What are you doing? Pushing little kids around!! You should be ashamed of yourselves!!" He scowled at them and shoved them violently. "Get out of here!! Before I tell your parents what you did!!" He grabbed a medium-sized rock from the ground and started throwing it up and down while looking at them.

The three boys stared at him, especially at the rock he was holding. Afraid that he might throw it at them, they suddenly stood up and ran away, screaming like little girls.

The older boy dropped the rock. He held out both his hand to the two kids. "You alright?" He asked the both of them.

They both nodded. They took his hand and helped themselves up.

TThe little boy ran and hugged the older boy. "Thank you, older brother!!"

The little girl followed and hugged him as well. "Thank you, older brother!!" She repeated.

The tall boy hugged them both. "No problem!" He patted their heads. "Always remember that I'll be here to protect you and be here for you. Okay?"

The kids both nodded. Then the older boy let go. "Let's go home and eat, okay? I'm getting hungry." His stomach suddenly growled.

The kids started laughing. They walked out of the park, the three of them holding hands and skipping together.

As they crossed the street, the older boy pushed them to his right side as a car came up.

The boy held his hand, palms facing up, to signal the car to stop as they crossed. They started walking, with the kids on his right side.

A large screeching sound instantly hit his ears. He turned his head left to see the car swerving swiftly towards them. He repeated the signal to stop but the car just kept on moving - and fast.

Seeing that the car wasn't gonna stop, the older boy pushed the kids back behind him. "Mi-chan," He looked at the little girl. "Take Yu-chan and go back to the sidewalk." He took Yu-chan's hand and gave it to Mi-chan. "Go back, go back!! Run!! Run!!!"

Mi-chan took Yu-chan's hand and pulled him in the opposite direction. "Yu-chan, let's go!!"

Yu-chan wouldn't move. His hand was still on the tall boy's shirt.

"Yu-chan!!" Mi-chan yelled. "Come on!!" She dragged the little boy away as she ran for cover.

Yu-chan ran. Then he stopped as they almost reached the sidewalk. "Wait!!" He turned around and looked back, realizing that the older boy wasn't following them. "Older brother!!" He reached out his hand to him.

The car swerved forward and stopped abruptly as its front bumper crashed against the tall boy. The boy dropped his raised arm as he closed his eyes and winced in pain.

"Yu-chan..." He whispered before his body swayed and fell down onto the hard ground.
