Chapter Four

"So what happened?" Emiko sat on the counter while eating. She pointed at me with her apple.

I took the cake out of the freezer and set it down on the table. "The guy was unbelievable!! He tried to blame it all on me!! Eh, hello?? He wasn't looking at where he was walking, either. He said he saw me looking at somewhere else when I bumped into him..."

"What did you say?"

"I told him if he saw me looking somewhere else, then he should've had the sense to avoid me!" I shook my head.

"Okay...so why are you still mad? I mean, that happened three days ago..." She gave me a confused look.

"I'm upset because...I saw you-know-who when I was walking, which caused the 'accident'..." I whispered.

"What?" She leaned forward. "I can't hear you..."

I rolled my eyes at her. "I saw...you-know-who across the street. I saw him..." I waggled my eyebrows at her.

"Eeeehhhh???" She nearly choked on her apple as she heard the three words. I quickly rushed over to pat her back as she coughed.

"You okay?"

"Yeah..." She shook her whole body. "Gave me a fright there. Think I heard you wrong. Did you say you just say you saw you-know-who??"

"I don't know..." I hesitantly looked at her. "I wasn't even sure if it was him. I mean, I didn't even make sure. I just ran off because I was too embarrassed at what happened. My eyes were probably deceiving me..."

"Look, don't worry about it. I'm sure he didn't see you. And you said it so yourself - it might not be him. Don't worry so much about it..."

I smiled at her. "Thanks."

I turned back to my work. Grabbing the metal spatula, I started covering the cake with the icing while listening to Emiko's stories.

After an hour, I transferred the cake onto a plate. "What do you think? Would anyone buy this?"

"Of course!" Emiko got off the counter and guided me out to the display counter at the front. "Come on!"

~~~~~~~~~~
"Thank you!" I bowed to a young woman and her little boy. "Come again!!"
Emiko gave me a nudge. I turned around and gave her a questioning look. She pointed to the guy in front of the display case. I laughed. The guy had been standing there the whole time, just looking at the cakes on display. He had this weird, spaced-out look on his face.
"Yeah, I know." I whispered to her. "I've been watching him and he's been here the whole time, looking at the display case for awhile now..."
"Oh." She took one step forward. "Excuse me? Can I help you sir?"
The guy stood there, still staring at the case. "Sir?" She prodded and waved a hand in front of him.
He tore his eyes away from the case and followed her hand. "Oh! Sumimasen!" He blinked a few times and pointed at the strawberry cake. "I was wondering...are you selling that cake?"
"Yes." She smiled at him.
His eyes lit up. "Ah, I'll buy that one!"
She stepped back and took the cake out of the display case. After wrapping it in a box, she placed it on the counter.
"Would there be anything else you would like?" She asked him. "Some bread maybe?"
He looked at her and gave a sheepish smile. "Ah...do - do you have some...miruku pan?"
"Actually, we just baked a fresh batch. How many would you like?"
"One dozen!" Emiko went around the back to get a fresh batch. After wrapping up all the guy's purchases, she gave him his bill. He paid for it and took the boxes.
"Thank you and come again!" She smiled at him as she handed the boxes. He smiled shyly back at her and left.
I wasn't sure, but I could've sworn he was staring at her for a moment before smiling back.
