Chapter Five
I look at the mirror and brush my hair back, putting on Emiko's red hair band after. I slip on the apron and go out into the bakeshop. You'd think that, on a Saturday, I'd have something better to do but unfortunately I don't. One of the part-timers called in sick today so I had to cover for her.
I take out the cake from the freezer and bring it for display. As soon as I store it into the display case, the bell jingles, giving me a signal that a customer has come in.
I close the case and step out from behind. "Welcome!" I greeted the person as I stood behind the counter.
A young guy stood in front of me. He was wearing a beanie cap and sunglasses. He was holding a bouquet of flowers and was just standing there, looking? maybe staring at me. I wasn't sure at first, since there wasn't anyone else around but me and it was hard to tell, especially when his eyes were covered.
"Nani?" I asked him.
"You??" He blurted out. "You're the girl??" He raised his arms in the air. "I can't believe this!! I can't believe it's you!!"
"What?" I raised an eyebrow at him. What is this guy talking about? "Are you okay?"
He shook his head. "Here." He stepped forward and set the flowers on the counter. "These are for you."
I looked down at the flowers lying on the table. "Huh?" I was confused. "But - "
The bell jingled again as the door opened. I raised my head to find that he had gone. I make my way around the counter and run after him. "Wait!"
I run outside to catch him but once there, he sped off in a blue car. I sighed and turned around, going back into the shop instead.
I pick up the bouquet of flowers lying on the counter. White and red roses adorned with baby's breath. I lean back against the counter and sigh when a small object falls on the floor.
"Eh?" I pick it up.
It was a small envelope. Inside was a card. It read:
I saw these flowers and I immediately thought of you.
I hope you don't mind but I wanted to give you these.
The first time I saw these, I thought they were beautiful so
I wanted to give them to the most beautiful girl I know - you.
I hope you like it because I like you!!

And below the letter was a drawing of a girl. Beside the girl were words in fancy letters.
It read: To Emiko.
