Chapter 7
"What the - ?" I yelled.
"Look, look!! I got another one!" Emiko shoved a bouquet of flowers into my face as soon as I came into the room.
I stared as she fussed over yet another bouquet, this time Yellow Malaysian Mums. She's been getting a lot since that day her secret admirer came here and accidentally mistook me for her. That was three weeks ago. And every week since then, she's been getting a lot, like three times a week.
She was smiling as she put the flowers on a vase. Must be nice to be someone's object of affections, I thought. I shrugged. Eh, whatever...
I went to my room, dropped my bag and plopped down on the bed. I closed my eyes and buried my face under the pillows. Not even five minutes have passed that I heard the door suddenly slamming open and a loud, squealy voice interrupt my rest.
"Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!!!!" A high-pitched voice screeched into my ears.
"Keep it down!! I'm trying to rest!!"
"Hanari, Hanari!! Look at this!!! Ohmygodohmygod!!!" Emiko started shaking me, hard. She sat down next to me and shook me repeatedly. "Hanari!!!"
I remove my head from under the pillow and look up at her. "Nani? What's going on??"
"This!!" Again, shoving a card into my face. "You HAVE got to read this!!"
"What is it?" I sit up and take the card from her. I open it and read the contents.
Oh. My. God.
I stare at her in shock as I hold the card.
"I KNOW!!!" She stares back, with wide happy eyes, as if she's read my thoughts.
"He...wants you to...meet him..." I say slowly, trying to grasp the situation. God, do I sound retarded or what? "Am I getting this right?"
She nods, still with a smile on her lips.
I went back and kept re-reading the letter, trying to make sense of something, anything. But in the end I found nothing. It was still there - he really wanted to meet her. I couldn't believe it...
"So it is true.." I blinked several times. "He really does want to meet you."
"Ne," She said, "read it aloud. Please..."
"Um...why?"
"Because I want to hear it. Please..." She begs.
I sighed and frowned at her. "You just really want to rub it in my face, don't you?"
"No!" She protested. "I'm just so happy that I kind of want to share it with the world!!"
I have to admit, her happiness is a bit infectious.
"Fine..." I relent. I open the card and start reading the contents out loud:
Dear Emiko,
I was on my way to work yesterday and I passed by the park. While walking, I started admiring the flowers and the trees, as yesterday was such a beautiful summer day. As I admired the beauty, your face came into my mind...
...That's when I remembered. Yesterday was one month ever since I laid my eyes on you. And it was three weeks ago that I started sending you flowers, to show my admiration for you...
The truth is, I do admire you. And I think you're an amazing person, so amazing in fact that I want to get to know you more...
I hope you won't take it against me if I become so forward and ask you if we could meet. I really want to meet you and get to know more about you...
I really want us to meet so I will be waiting for you at Shiba Park, near Tokyo Tower, this Friday at 8 p.m. I will be wearing a red baseball cap and a blue shirt so that you could easily recognize me. You, of course, can wear anything you want since I can easily recognize a beauty like you in a crowd...
I will be waiting for you there. I really hope you could come!!
Waiting to meet you,
Your Secret Admirer
As usual, my paranoid instincts started to kick in again. I bit my lower lip nervously. "Are you sure about this?"
She took my hands in hers and looked at me straight in the eyes. "I'm sure. Hanari," She squeezed my hand tightly. "I really, really want to meet him. I've been sort-of driving myself crazy every night, not knowing who he is, what he does or what he looks like. I really, really want to know, even just for my peace of mind..."
I gave her a half-smile. "Well, it's your life...do whatever you want. Just...you know, be careful, okay?"
She nodded. "Ne..."
"What?"
"Can I tell you something?" She took a deep breath. "To be honest, I'm kind of scared..."
"Scared? of what? Why?"
"I'm scared of meeting him..." She looked sideways. "Ne, why don't you come with me?"
"Huh?"
"Come on!! It'll be so much fun!! Aren't you curious as well? Don't you want to know who he is??"
"Well..." Yeah, I was a bit curious. Then she flashes me her sad face, the one that she knows I can't resist, mostly because seeing her sad is kind of annoying since it doesn't suit her beautiful face. "Please...please come with me. I really want you to be there with me. For...for moral support!!"
I tried resisting but gave in. "Fine, fine. I'll go with you..." I sighed. "But if he turns out to be a creepy stalker, then you're buying me dinner, okay?"
"Deal!" She shook my hand. She jumped off my bead and flounced, flounced out of my room and closed the door.
I fell back onto the bed and made the sign of the cross. Then I thought of a silent prayer.
"Dear God,
It's me Hanari. Please let everything go well on Friday when we meet Emiko's secret admirer. I pray for our safety as well.
Thanks a bunch!!
Amen"
Let's just hope he's not some kind of pervert or something...
