Heya - really excited to get things going with grad school. And $700 a month for rent with utilities...in Hawaii! Very awesome. And, yes, moving in and getting settled is very crazy. My start here was rather hectic, and four weeks later, I'm still not entirely moved in. Thankfully, not starting classes yet.

Anywho, take care of yourself (like a day to relax, despite how much you need to work out for grad school...every chance you can get is important), and enjoy Hawaii. Despite my mother's family being from Hawaii, can't say I can give you any tips. But, go find yourself a good shaved ice place (hole in the wall sort of places, with lots of Hawaiians speaking pidgeon outside...when it's done right, the ice almost seems fluffy rather than chunks so it melts in your mouth).

And, all the things you've discovered about Hawaii (driving, tourists/non-tourists, crazy shopkeepers) - all so true! Actually, your incident at the market is kind of common throughout Hawaii wherever there's a bazaar-like setting. Hawaii is sort of a bridge between East Asia and mainland USA, so plenty of cultural influences from Asia, particularly Japan and China.

The market incident was so weird. I didn't want to be impolite and say "No, I don't want it, leave me alone" but I was close to doing that just to get away.
And I've already had a few chances to use my Japanese skills when I was in Waikiki.
I couldn't believe the number of tourists who would walk in front of cars. My mom and I had a rental car and we would try to pull out of the hotel parking lot. We kept waiting for someone to realize we were pulling out but people kept walking in front of us without a second look. ~_~

If I had known it would be spending over a month and a half looking for housing I would have started back in May. @_@ I didn't think it would be so crazy. At least it ended well for me.

I'm waiting to rest once I take care of everything I need to take care of but I will try to rest soon.
And thanks for the shaved ice tip. The neighborhood where I'm staying in is a little more secluded and residential so I might be able to find a shop like that close by.
