I HAD AN EPIPHANY! The reason that people don't like Rose Tyler is that she has basically zero flaws. She's "too heroic." So maybe that ultimately makes her flat as a character.
yeah, i guess rose has a little bit of the 'mary sue' about her, but she's always had enough goofy moments to offset it. also, she's not conventionally intelligent like the doctor. she worked in a clothing store. sometimes she gets jealous. and she's not conventionally pretty w/ long legs and a tiny waist and huge boobs. so i feel like she has just the right balance of 'flaws' (in quotes because they're just flaws if you're looking at it from a mainstream POV, lol) and virtues

Ugh, you are so right about the "too soon" in terms of weak female character representation thing. I mean, thanks, we have plenty. And UGH I just don't get Amy Pond because most of her personality is reacting to what's going around her...like in a passive way.. I still can't quite articulate what bugs me so much about her. I guess to me she comes across as inauthentic. It's like, PICK A LANE, are you going to be assertive and bad-ass or wailing for the Doctor? Like, it's super inconsistent from one episode to the next

re amy's character, i feel like the doctor is portrayed somewhat inconsistently as well. the whole deal with river song just doesn't make sense. unclear motives, yet again. I COULD PROBABLY RAIL ON ABOUT THIS FOREVER. why does he like her? when do they fall in love? what. is the deal. all she's done is be confusing and appear out of nowhere. what happened in that episode you haven't seen yet still doesn't justify it for me (the s4 one w/ tennant in it
