This makes me angry. To sum up for non-Bostonians. The T (our metro) is switching from tokens to passes, but is screwing around by not posting the fare ($2 per ride), not fixing machines, and not allowing employees to talk to reporters about how bad things are. Um, I actually like the name, but you're right about everything else.

I adore the DC transit system, though it is flawed and periodically broken. I like the pay-by-distance thing, as opposed to Chicago (and Boston), where you pay a flat $2 (but less if you use the card . . . way to take our money!).

I may be projecting because the CTA/el and I are on very, very uneasy terms with each other. Perhaps if service would stop getting suspended for train derailments, or if they weren't planning a two year shutdown of parts of the system.

Interesting. I actually really dislike the the pay-by-distance scheme; I suppose it's a little more fair, but I thought it was more than a little confusing to tourists. Otherwise, I'd agree that the the D.C. Metro is superior to Boston's T.

It may be that as a DC native I was brought up with pay-by-distance and so I'm utterly used to it. It just never made sense that I could pay $2 to go two blocks or 150. *shrug*

i've always thought of it as a convenience fee: if you really want, you can waste the $2 for a very short ride, but it isn't worth it. it's almost an incentive (to me, at least) to just walk the shorter gaps. and it just keeps becoming a better deal for longer distances.

at least, that's how i feel when i actually have a subway system...
