It had become a tradition, though Amelia didn’t exactly know when it had become a tradition, for the little children of Atlantis (and the not so little children) to go trick or treating around the living quarters for Halloween.

Sure, it might not be a unique tradition, but for Amelia and the rest of the crew on the expedition, it was enough for them to not get homesick. The excuse was for the slowly growing population in the city not to miss out of earthly pleasures just because they were not born there. Amelia was sure it was for the adults more so than the children. So for Atlantis, it was unique and eagerly anticipated each year.

Ronon didn’t quite get the idea of dressing up as good and evil characters so that you could receive candy and such in return, but he soon got the hang of it when he realised as a father, he received a ten percent commission.

Amelia can still remember one particular year when Maia had just turned six. Her younger sister, Nikia, was only four and as such, was a particularly stubborn young girl. Whatever the elder sister wanted, Nikia would be sure to follow. But that also meant the same for what Maia didn’t want.

Without the chance to get back to earth this particular year, Amelia had only the choice of a soldier, courtesy of the Lorne family, and a princess, given generously by McKay from his daughter, Lucy, who this year was staying on Earth with her mother.

Naturally, what ensued was an all out war between her babies. An hour later and the princess issue was still not resolved.

“Mummy, I don’t want to be a princess. Princesses are so... pink!” The disgusted look on Maia’s face almost made Amelia want to laugh and cry at the same time.

She then turned to her other daughter, holding out the offending pink frilly dress with a pleading look. Nikia just crossed her arms, screwed up her face and stamped her foot with a determined shake of her head. It was hopeless.

When Maia had shown promise of taking after her father, Amelia had hoped that Nikia would not be the same. She was fine with having them become strong, independent women. But when that change had begun to happen at such an early age, she started to miss all the dress ups and pretend games of mummies and daddies that she would never have. She could see Nikia was more of a ‘pretty in pink’ kind of girl, but the pull of her sister’s influence was stronger at this point.

She had appealed one last time but was rejected yet again. It was time to step up the game. She was about to start threatening them with sending them as they were, dressed only in their underpants, if they did not comply with their mother’s wishes, but they were saved by the entrance of her other half.

“They aren’t dressed.”

Amelia could have smacked him as a thank you for such an obvious statement. She laid the dress, now forgotten, on the end of the bed as the two girls rushed over to be swept up by their father in a giant bear hug.

“Mummy wants us to wear that,” Said Maia, pointing with distain at the dress from the great height Ronon held her.

“What’s wrong with it?” He asked the young girl but it was Nikia who answered as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“It’s pink.”

“And it’s poofy.” Her sister added, nodding very vigorously to appeal to her father. He was sure to understand and Amelia could see he was considering giving in to his daughters. But then he saw Amelia’s face. Stone cold expression and crossed arms.

“What else have we got?” He asked of her, setting the girls down on the floor once more, where Maia had to crane her neck back just to see his face. Nikia had no hope, only grabbing onto his shin to feel the comfort of his presence.

“A gladiator.” Ronon looked slightly confused. “A soldier.” Now he understood where the fighting was coming from. Of course Maia would pick the soldier over the princess and Nikia wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Well, John and Teyla are going to be here any minute with the boys and we can’t send them out like this.”

Amelia was seriously tempted to smack him. Ronon had the knack for just stating the obvious and Amelia usually found it endearing. But right now, as exhausted as she was, she couldn’t be bothered to find it anything more than annoying.

“Which one is bigger?”

“We got the soldier from Lorne so I think it would just fit Maia since they are around the same age.”

“I don’t want to be a princess!” Nikia screamed, tears already threatening to fall as her sister seemed to be now winning the battle.

And then the door chime sounded. Ronon managed to get the children untangled from his legs to go answer it. Amelia was still trying to calm the toddler down as John and Teyla came in, leading Torren and Liam behind them.

Giving up on Nikia, Amelia picked her up and handed her to Ronon where she almost instantly calmed down, resting her head on his shoulder.

It was then that Maia chose to come out of the bathroom, dressed rather haphazardly in the soldier’s uniform.

“Oh, Maia, you look great,” John told her and the grin that appeared on the girl’s face could have lit up the entire room.

“I want to be the soldier.” Nikia got out from between sniffles, poking out her face from between her father’s embrace.

Torren, dressed almost the same as Maia, had gone up to her and starting fixing up her attire. Liam on the other hand, only a year younger than Nikia, was tugging on Ronon’s pants. He knelt down, letting his daughter have eye contact with the youngest Sheppard.

“Guess what I am?” He asked her, whispering very softly, though Amelia didn’t know why, as if it was some big secret.

Nikia, sucking on her fingers, sniffed then shrugged and wiped away some tears from her cheeks.

Liam leaned a little closer so he could reach her better. “I’m a prince.”

Nikia smiled.

Five minutes later and the two families strode down the halls of Atlantis, passing other children as they ran past, some with clearly more sugary sweets than the others. There were evil witches dressed head to toe in black and Lions, tigers and bears. Range was somewhat limited but it didn’t seem as if any of the children cared with the amount of fun they were having.

Torren, the eldest of the children by a few years, led the way for their little group like the true soldier he was. Maia was trying to keep up but with her noticeably shorter legs was having a hard time.

Their parents walked behind them, talking and chatting amongst themselves, only having to interfere if there was a dispute over the even distribution of candy.

And bringing up the rear were the two youngest. Hand in hand and skipping rather awkwardly as they went was the Prince and his Princess - pink, frilly dress and all.
