My family's got an aquarium. Or let's better say my father has got one, because every time anyone even so much as looks into the direction of the cleansing equipment everyone in the room miraculously vanishes, except for my father

I know huge amounts of algae on our plants made keeping the tank clean extremely difficult so I'd be with you on not returning the plant to the tank. however, if he loves it that much, would it be possible to keep the plant alive in some other container so that when he returns he can decide whether or not to keep it in the tank? That way you wouldn't have to try and keep the tank clean with it in there for the next while.
No, we don't have any other container where the plants could live for longer than a couple of hours :( Would be nice to have a small 4-5 gallons tank for purposes like this - or for separating spawn and baby fish.
I ended up throwing away most of it, because it was just disgusting, but leaving enough for it to regrow if I can't convince him to get rid of the rest.
I think ultimately that you should get rid of it because it's not good for the tank environment. But if he's that attached to it, at least wait until he gets home and you can explain it to him and he's not left out of the decision.
I ended up throwing away most of it, but left a couple of branches that were slightly better off than the others. And we still have some scraps growing in the sand, that were so small, I was too lazy to pull them all out, so I guess he can always regrow it.
But seriously, we have so much algae, on other plants, too, I'd prefer if we ripped out everything that's already overgrown and just put new plants in. Or just kept those two kinds that thrive and don't grow algae.
Unfortunately all of it is slimy, but I did try to pick out the best parts. Quite hopeless if you ask me, but if he really wants it, we still have some . *grumbles*
ooo if you have baby catfish, you should perhaps put them into another smaller tank so the other fish don't eat them...
I don't know what you could do- my fishy lives in a tiny one gallon aquarium in solitary confinement (he doesn't play well with others) and he only has plastic plants in there...so when algae grows on it I wash it off
I think they are already too large to be eaten, but you can never be careful enough, right? I put them in a kind of small rearing tank within the large one. They were already foraging with the adult fish, so I didn't want to take them out completely. I just hope this thing stays closed - looked a bit flimsy.

Oh no! Poor fishy :( What kind do you have?
We have one old big solitary Zebrafish who is aggressive against everything smaller than he, but our angelfishes put him into place when he gets too uppish :D
hey! do you have a salt water or a fresh water aquarium. My mom has got a fresh water one. It's really crappy to get it all cleaned up, I totally know your pain. We too tend to vanish when it's time for the cleaning. We've had several fish die already mostly due to inexperience with dealing with water PH and stuff... Anyway it sucks when the fishes can't breathe anymore, you see them all trying to breathe at the surface, I feel really bad when that happens.
Hope you have more fun than I do. XD hahahah I keep forgetting that the fish exist...
Fresh water. I have no idea about this PH stuff - my dad always takes care of the water quality, but more often than not we just let it take care of itself for weeks on end, and miraculously it does! Haven't had a great deal of fishes dying in years. I bet salt water is much more complicated - at least you already get fresh water from the tap.
I really like it - it's got a very prominent place in the living room and we've got several fishes with a lot of character, so it's impossible to forget about them. Especially when we eat fish and they all gather at the front and look at us disapprovingly :D
ahahah, well, no the ph thing i think it is best to leave it alone too. That's why our fish died, cause the ph didnt work usually. My mom loves playing doctor... "Oh, I am sure the fish could use a little of this product, and why not some of this other here too?" I could go on and on. XD
