Report from home, and pictures

Aug 21, 2007 20:34

We got back to the house around 6:30 tonight, after going to Steven's house to retrieve our cats and clean up after ourselves. We were in no major rush to hurry home because we knew everything was basically OK here. The extent of smoke in the house was unknown, and the possibility of burning in our back yard was unknown, but I could tell yesterday ( Read more... )

Dude. I am so glad you're all okay.

The irony of your having taken the cats with you to Washington "just in case" is amazing.

Yep. Plus that it happened after I returned from Baltimore. Incredible. We are very very fortunate.

I don't even want to imagine Kim's brain if this had been simultaneous with your ER trip. It would be a very messy place.

Three words:
Home. Water. Cannon.

So, next fire season, want me to remind you to have your bugout bags packed?

Yep, because apparently we are incapable of remembering it ourselves. I really feel like we got caught unawares, and there's no excuse for that. I have a newfound appreciation for how quickly circumstances can change. That knowledge will be very valuable to us from here on. We came through this OK only because nothing bad actually happened. If something had, we'd have been screwed.

I'm trying to learn from this myself - my family needs to be better prepared to drop everything and boogie if the need arises. We'd have had a real Keystone Kops affair in the same situation.

I'm glad everyone and everything are OK.

Wow. I'd never want a fire to get any closer.

I take your lesson to heart. I always figure I'd have time to get stuff and go, but I can see how that may be a really bad assumption, not only for fire, but for sudden things like earthquakes. More planning is in order.

Glad you're all ok and can get back to life as usual.

Damn straight. This experience has been an eye-opener. My experience with this sort of event comes from my years living in Florida, when hurricanes would approach in slow motion, and there was all the time in the world to prepare. The thought of hurrying, or not having time for one more trip into the house to retrieve something, or actually immediately finding yourself in a life-threatening situation was just not something that seemed real to me. It does now.
