My experience with this sort of event comes from my years living in Florida, when hurricanes would approach in slow motion, and there was all the time in the world to prepare. The thought of hurrying, or not having time for one more trip into the house to retrieve something, or actually immediately finding yourself in a life-threatening situation was just not something that seemed real to me. It does now.
