I think that's the main problem with the novel I wrote, I included the back story, and it's not necessary. Eliminating the first few chapters should speed up the plot too(was told the first chapter "stalls"). I need to rewrite and add in back story elements in a more natural fashion.
It gets bogged down when you have so many ideas in your head and so much you want to put in. Sometimes an overly ambitious story needs a second glance. I decided this morning that one of the key elements -- connection with a sister planet from which the main character comes, though her ancestry bears a link to this place -- is out. I'm going to set everything in the world I'm creating, but bring some of the concepts I was going for. I'll simply set it on a different continent. That requires me to do some shifting, but the story will be tighter. It's not as if I can't use the other idea at some point, but I'm looking at what will aid the main story I want to tell.
