I don't get why (some) married people say their spouse is their "better half." That half may make you a "better" person but ultimately, YOU are the one that has the final say in your actions. In my mind, when people say that, they're basically saying that, without that half, they would be a bad person, no matter what. YOU are your better half.

I think you read into it too much. It's just a nice way of praising your spouse / significant other. Also, who says that I can't be a good half and my gf can't be a great half, thus making her the better half? :P

It's just a way to compliment your spouse. I usually hear the husband saying it about their wife, you know, since the woman runs the house! *wink wink*
