Negativland, Grant Morrison and overdue library books

Again, nothing done towards landing a permanent job today. I spent most of the day at the copyright conference at the Waldorf Hotel (with all due respect, I just don't get the tiki aesthetic). Mark Hosler of Negativland was kind enough to sign (in blurry magic marker) a DVD, along with a warning: "Do not sell on eBay".

Yeah, my thoughts too. I know some people _can_ do it, but it may require a rare combination of talent, determination and favourable circumstances.

The question that strikes me is, is that true of every interesting or innovative artist?

Do you mean trying to emulate a given artist and make yourself the next whatever is doomed to becoming, at best, an also-ran, if it's possible at all? I think so. An artist's work can't be completely separated from the social and economic context.
