so you're looking for a place to stay? what is your budget?
and yes, it will be cold so bundle up! and toronto doesn't have that many great poutine places compared to, say, montreal.

what to do, what to do.

well, there are a few things. spend a day wandering around queen street west. lots of great shops, cafes, restaurants, galleries, etc. take a stroll through kensington/chinatown for vintage clothes, fruit markets, and inexpensive places to eat. and if it's too cold to be outside, there's always the typical touristy things? like the CN tower, the art gallery of ontario, the royal ontario museum.. though, both the AGO and ROM are going through some renovations right now. (but they're still open)

as for specific restaurant recommendations, i have plenty. i don't really know where to start! what kind of foods do you like?

cool, thanks for the ideas, i will definitely stroll around despite the cold, maybe do a little christmas shopping. i actually just went ahead and booked at the courtyard marriott downtown, which i guess is on yonge street, so that is supposed to be pretty central.

i'm hoping to try some things that i've heard are good in toronto, which so far is mostly dim sum, but if there are some cool places that are kind of unique or quintessentially toronto-esque, i'd love to try them out.

yeah, the Courtyard Marriott is really close to the College subway stop as well as the Eaton Centre, so you're all set. you can either walk down to Queen street, or just hop on the subway ($2.75 one way) over to Osgoode station. if you get off at Osgoode, it's a good place to start your walk down Queen West.

a few stores to check out while on Queen:
the magic pony - 694 queen st west
the paper place - 887 queen st west

amato is a local toronto pizza chain, and there's one close to your hotel also on yonge street, just south of college. but you live in new york, so it's possible that you're tired of pizza? :)

the dim sum places downtown aren't nearly as good as the ones up north though. there's a larger chinese community out in scarborough and up north in markham / richmond hill. that's where you'll find the good stuff. but for a pricier experience, Lai Wah Heen inside the metropolitan hotel has great dim sum. and if you're looking to dine at a place with a view, i'd recommend the Pearl restaurant down by the harbourfront centre. oh, and toronto has all these great little neighbourhoods as well.. koreatown is up on bloor street, just west of bathurst. (Go to Bathurst Station) try Joons for a great korean meal.. or stop by any one of the restaurants for a bowl of pork bone soup (are you a vegetarian?) and/or bibimbap. Honest Ed's is close by as well, and if you're into comics, check out the Beguiling which is just around the corner.

there's also little india, little portugal, little italy, etc. you can walk to some of these places, or hop on a streetcar. it's all very accessible.

for breakfast at $10 a person or less, check out Maggie's on College. you get free coffee/tea refills with your meal. (restaurant link) from your hotel, you can just grab the streetcar and head west for about 10 minutes.

you can see some photos of these places i've recommended (and more) over at my foodblog:
