s recent posts"dr. miguel de la torre is a professor at hope. he's cuban, and a self proclaimed radical feminist. he teaches religion. specifically classes titled "reading the bible from the margins" and "liberation theology". these classes deal with how we perceieve the bible, christianity. how people on the margins (those who aren't white anglo saxon protestants) read the bible. people like women, people of color, homosexuals. he teaches his students to think critically about dictionary definitions, and gives historical and political context to bible stories that don't actually mean what we grew up believing they meant. like how moses married a black woman, and everyone reads that story as if his people were angry for "marrying down", but in reality, he married a PRINCESS. moses married up, and his people were angry with him for being uppity. but in this society, marrying black is seen as marrying down.
in his classes you read such books as "learning to be white", "gay theology without apology", "the black christ", etc. he is an activist, his wife is also. she founded the tulipanes festival,
http://www.tlaff.org/ he says things like "i like having sex with my wife, i don't see why gay people shouldn't also get to"
he talks about the spirit of the law AND the letter of the law and how various people in power have twisted the bible to their own whims and wishes. women used to be leaders in the church, and now they are denied ordainship because of a bunch of mysogenistic bastards like king james.
he challenges his students not just academically (he's really intense and demanding) but on their views to which they've never thought about, and don't really have any reason for why they voted for bush. he is an accomplished author and nationally respected in his field.
remember james dobson? well, because of his natural tendency to spread hate and silence goodness and his complete arrogance in believing in his own selfimposed divine status on what christianity is supposed to be, he is basically being chased out of holland.
i direct you to my jake's lj (partially because he's so articulate, and partially because he has links, and partially because he actually still keeps his journal public)

Hello All,
I am sure most of you have by now heard about the situation with Prof. de
la Torre and Hope College. I think that most people would agree that what
happened probably wasn't totally fair. I also believe that if anything unjust
were to happen to any student here at Hope College, Prof. de la Torre would be
one of the first to stand up for us. In the spirit of sticking up for what is
right, let's have a demonstration for Prof. de la Torre so that everyone at
this school and in this community is forced to hear our voice! Next
Wednesday, April 27th, lets meet at the anchor by Voorhees and the Chapel at
Noon. We
then march past Voorhees, the Presidents house, Lubberes, make a right at
Phelps, another right at the flag pole and make our way back to the Presidents
house. Make signs, posters, booming voices, everything. Lets make people
take notice. Please send this email to anyone you know at Hope that you think
would want to take part in this. Lets try to get as many people as possible
at this thing, the more we have, the more they HAVE to listen to us. The
Holland Sentinel will be there and maybe the Grand Rapids Press. So at the
very least, maybe you can get your picture in the paper. If you have any
questions feel free to contact me, maybe we can have a sign making party or
something next week? Lets end this school year with a bang. Thanks.
Blake
Also, if you are the head of a campus group, Hope Dems, Opus, IMC, forward
this badboy to your lists. Thanks.
CIT shut down my e-mail because I was sending out e-mails about De La
Torre. If you could, please circulate this e-mail from Blake. It has
more details about the protest
Hello all,
I'm assuming that you have all heard about the whole De La Torre
fiasco. I just wanted to let you all know that we are planning a
protest for next wednesday at Noon. More details will follow when we
solidify plans.
In the meantime, write letters/ send e-mails/ make visits to Pres.
Bultman and let him know how you feel about this. You will probably be
told that he is out of town right now, but I was assured that he is in
fact on campus and involved with the visitation day. Let him know that
we won't stand for close-minded censorship on our campus. This can't be
set as a precedent or the whole concept of tenure will become
ridiculous. We won't have good faculty if they can't speak their minds.
Brad
Finally, someone is willing to do something. I just submitted an editorial to
the Holland Sentinel about Miguel. here's the link, let's overload it with
support for him, let's post the petition blitz-style, let's have a sit-in on
the lawn. i'm down for anything, but jesus, let's do something!
http://www.hollandsentinel.com/lettersubmit/ p.s. why stop there? let's call for the end of action against poets!

Hi -
As some of you may know, Religion professor Miguel De la Torre will not be
returning next year, as the administration, specifically President Bultman has
expressed their "disappointment" in De la Torre's honesty concerning the ways
Christians, specifically James Dobson, use the Bible for hate (for instance in
regards to homosexuality).
This is a tremendous loss for not only the college, the students, but also the
community.
There will be a rally in support of De la Torre on Wednesday April 27 at Noon
by the Anchor. This is not only for De la Torre, but for all of our professors
who are not allowed to voice their beliefs because it may "threaten the
reputation of Hope College" .
Please forward this to friends and colleagues. At this point it is truly up to
the students to stand and say we support our faculty.
thanks,
Stephanie McCann
