It's a Livejournal variation, except it has a unique "Watch, Trust, Friend" (they don't call it that anymore, I think, but that was its original term) for "people you read, but who you don't allow to look at anything but your public entries," "people you allow to look at your generically protected entries," and "people you read and allow to read your generically protected entries

From what I can tell, it IS one of their goals. Getting actual protected entries from LJ will probably require LJ cooperation and collaboration, though, so that may or may not happen.
On the other hand, if it does, it's a great change for LJdescendent systems everywhere.
